a common complaint of Hortons coffee is that it is always "Burnt".

I just don't see how that's even possible. The coffee is just shitty, thats why it tastes "burnt".

I always take it to mean coffee thats been sitting on a warmer too long or just sitting too long in general. Not literally burnt.

But yeah Tim's sucks. Only place I get coffee at where I take cream and sugar.

The coffee at the bottom gets blacker/darker if it sits at a high temperature for too long.

Not so much burn it but the water can be too hot and it breaks down the coffee more than it should and makes it bitter.

Yes, it can burn. Technically, anything with carbon atoms in it can burn.

Not burn like lights on fire but you can get some real bad tasting coffee that's been sitting on a hot burner for too long.

Water that's too hot can extract more compounds from the beans than you want, leading to a bitter taste. There's a sweet spot you wanna hit between time spent brewing and temperature used

some darker roasts can taste 'burnt'.

when a coffee pot sits on a warmer too long it can and will burn the coffee inside. this is most likely the explanation for TH's tasting 'burnt'.

you can also over extract when brewing which is where bitterness in coffee comes from 95% of the time
