For as long as Ive been working (a little over fifteen years now) I have always taken my breaks in my car.

I completely remove myself from the work environment while Im not getting paid.

It's stunning how it simply can't wait, but this is only ever a problem if your physical presence is in the office. God damn it.

And if you are IT, never ever go to holiday parties, or hell any party that is company related. You will be asked by a line of people for IT help even though they refuse to call in or send an email about it during work hours.

What's more annoying is you work a full shift and you leave for the day and they call you at night asking you to work overnight that same day.

When you already have a day shift after that night shift they want you to take. Pilot Flying J

Quit years ago lol it was just a job that I got during one of those "have to work anywhere rn" times. Much better job now.

They let you say no, and I did (I lied and said I was drunk, wtf are they gonna do about it? Lol I'm off) but you feel like you're letting the company down.

Another reason I hate being in the office, and will give up WFH over my cold, dead body.

I have this line manager who is trying to get people back into the office with an almost religious fervour. Even before covid I had agreed a part WFH work pattern and the other day he said "hey so those thursdays and fridays, as it happens we have a quiet office corner free now if you want to come in those days?"

Hmm let me think about that. I lose 4 hours of personal time, I double my fuel costs, this decision is not attached to any discernable metrics other than the fact that I've told you specifically that this arrangement works great and makes me happier... gee where do I sign up???

Oh yeah, my company has been pretty weird with it as well. I actually moved out of state last year more or less putting a line in the sand for me saying if you really want me back in, too bad, fire me instead, but Ive actually received 2 promotions since so it seems they have no issue with this being a permanent arrangement for me.

That said.. the company isnt doing great and people are leaving left and right. In spite of that, they have been pushing hard for people to come back to the office. Why? Well, in 2019 they took over one of the floors in our building and signed a new long term lease as it relates to the build out.

Our president was one of the folks pushing hard for this in the past several months. And well, he announced he is leaving in January. So

Old school company culture has this middle management thing where in order to justify their job they need bums on seats. It's silly.

About half an hour actual driving time, but when I factor in the faffing on either side of that it can be as much as an hour each way.

(Plus I meant for those 2 days. so 2 hours per day x2).

Office culture is why I vastly preferred being a bartender. Its super annoying trying to just relax when youre on break and someone or multiple people see youre clearly relaxing and decide Hey I bet he wants someone to talk to rn even though hes on his phone!.

God forbid you never show up to company functions, this basically makes you Satan. I dont even hate my coworkers, I just dont wanna talk to them when Im not on the clock lmao

Coworkers act like I'm weird for not wanting to eat my lunch with them... I either go home or eat in my car >_>

I don't mind eating with them but only if we are literally out in a place, eating. Nobody suddenly needs to talk about a report then do they >:/

Alright I gotta question for you. I turned up at a bar yesterday at 3.10. Opening time is 3pm. Door was unlocked. I go in and the guy behind the bar was annoyed as fuck I came in and told me to give him 10 minutes to open up. I said sure, and came back 15 minutes later. I get to the bar and he's just sitting there eating his lunch. I test the door and it's locked. He looks up at me standing outside the door and looks even more annoyed, so I left.

I'm like lol dude, maybe don't show up to work hungover and be annoyed at ME for this?

Anyway it wasn't a big deal and I found another bar, but is my assessment probably correct? I dunno what he was so shitty about. He definitely wasn't the owner either.

I've only had one place question why I didn't show up to one of those company functions. I told them I'd much rather be at home with my wife then at that function. They stopped questioning me regarding any future functions. Lol

I take my breaks in this empty mini conference room that no one uses that's attached to this area that used to be used by our recruiters but is currently empty. It's like a 10 second walk to the room. Very convenient.

Is it a bar that's pretty slow generally? Some bartenders skid by doing fuck all for hours so they think their job is being a part of the atmosphere/being taste testers their whole shift lol. Was he the only one that was there too? It DOES suck to show up and be the sole opener/others are late af cuz of all the prep you gotta do, but in that scenario it just sounds like he really didn't want to be there or do his job lol

Haha i remember the hr coordinator grinding up on one of the overweight managers and he got a chubby. Made for a very awkward day the next time we all came to the office. And that was also the last time we had alcohol at the christmas party.
