It was a combination of the cold and the lack of power for days in a row. I'm really not sure why people try to troll about it.

Do not buy this shit. I have one and the food in it is fucking nasty. It's also not even real emergency shit, some rations are just oatmeal. Most of it is dried pasta of some kind and I tell you that you are better with maruchan ramen bricks.

Seriously buy a crate of xmre with the flameless heaters. You stay warm and get good(ish) food.

generator scalpers are gonna love it

Also candles for heat is a bad idea and will do nothing for you. I watch a lot of guys that do stealth truck camping on youtube try this out and the results were whack. A guy in a very insulated tent with 15 tealights showed that it did nothing to keep him warm or even take the edge off.

Another one was a guy using Sterno cans in a truck with the clay pot method. Made 5 degrees of difference and cans burned out every 45 minutes or so.

Only time ive seen it actually make a difference was when a guy lit a candle and covered his entire body with a blanket and balled up over the candle. Something that would be an absolute last ditch thing because of how dangerous that would be.

Just invest in a kerosene space heater.

lmao @ the candles

The heated coat sounds like a silly idea as well, as it requires electricity and I doubt it is actually decent coat. A high-quality down parka is both far more practical and also likely warmer.

I finally stocked up on various supplies that would be useful last winter. Flashlights that can be wound to charge, candles for light should that fail, a little propane stove or some charcoal + mini grill never hurts either

Get a bunch of heavy blankets and you can put them at the bottoms of doors or over windows to conserve heat. All of this comes in handy in the midwest where winters can get pretty cold

For heat, just get a tent and set it up indoors. Stay in there and you will warm up it up in no time. There are even like bed tents or canopies that you can put over your bed for max comfort,

Do you nail them to the window frame? Im in an apartment with really poor insulation on the windows. I put up some blackout curtains with duct tape and they help a little bit but even they require constant retaping lest they fall down I want to put up a quilt but have no idea how Id get it to stay up (cant nail because renting).

Oh yeah, with candles when they burn you can sometimes waste a lot of wax because it all drips down. Using something like tealights or certain candle holders will help mitigate that

I think you can get special candles for the kind of you situation you may find yourself in, but don't quote me on that

Tinned/dried food is good, and don't forget a non-electric tin opener :D

I would hope that they strengthen the lines by then so that doesn't happen again. All you need is some extra clothes (like sweatshirts) and some extra blankets. No need to go ham like what you are doing. I'm just trying to save you money here.

Also the need to buy emergency rations is also not a need. It's not like you won't be able to drive anywhere.

So again... Texas state lawmakers passed laws to have winterization done on power generating resources.

Except

They included a loophole that allowed them to pay about $150 to just not do it.

They didn't close that loophole until last week. I'm not about to just trust and believe they will do the right thing all of a sudden.

Also, in icy conditions, I'd rather not have to drive anywhere unless it's an emergency. The supply chain in Texas was slowed to almost to a halt becuase the roads were all iced over.

Well that's stupid. I guess they like paying more to fix the lines when they go down instead of doing it from the get go.

@Shablagoo you can usually hook it over your curtain rod and it'll stay, maybe with some safety pins

Of course, the curtain rod needs to be either nailed or drilled, which we did anyway despite renting because we wanted actual curtains over our windows

Not really. If he does it right, a few candles will more than last. Its about heating as small of an area as possible and keeping the heat in. Shorter wick will also extend candle-life.

There are ways to make it work.

Stop buying gimmicky bulls***.

Battery packs aren't gimmicky. My phone has to stay on, and I'd like to keep my heated clothing items powered, too. The battery packs are essential for that. I'll have a battery powered generator, but the more I can offload charging my phone, headset, heated clothing, etc. to smaller battery packs, the better.

Be aware that a lot of those battery packs are pure bullshit numbers. 50,000 mah would be 15 18650 batteries, and I would guess 99% of battery packs claiming 50,000 mah are only large enough for like 5 18650, let alone 15. Like 50 amp hours is basically as powerful as a car battery. And lithium ion is good, but not that good.

https://www.amazon.com/50000mAh-External-Backup-Battery-Charger/dp/B07N5KF3GR/

something like that, do not expect it to live up to the numbers it claims.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some finessing of the numbers. They still work very well to keep my stuff charged when I'm out and about. I buy them periodically to get more and more capacity. I'm not so much concerned with doing the math about how many amp hours it actually has. I just like having extra battery packs for things.

Yeah this place has those plastic curtain pieces that can be turned with a plastic stick. No curtain rods but I guess I could ask management if I could install some.

Honestly I wonder if landlords and heating companies collaborate, lol. (Its a very old building so it wouldnt be up to the original builders as much as the modern owners.)
