do you have a rooted or jailbroken device?

my current phone is rooted. i root mine because:

  • i like centering my clock in the status bar
  • i like using AdAway, which blocks most ads on your phone
  • it's nice to have continued support from custom os developers when the manufacturer stops giving a fuck
otherwise there's not a lot of reasons to have a rooted device, so it isn't for everyone.

I don't see any reason to. I can do the first 2 reasons you listed without doing it and the 3rd only seems useful if you have a sketchy phone from a manufacturer no one has heard of.

i agree, and not sure if it's just a coincidence or not. twrp used to make flashing custom OS's much easier, but (last time i checked) twrp isn't supported on android 11, so now you have to jump through more hoops.

you can center the clock without switching to a custom OS? i've seen a few third party apps in the play store that let you do this, but they're usually shitty. as for the adblock thing, they make DNS adblockers that do the same thing, but they're not near as effective as AdAway, and they always force you to have an icon in your status bar. not to mention it seems to stop working randomly and i have to keep running the app again.

Edit: Replying to your comment about my 3rd point, i'm only referring to old ass phones. i have a pixel 3a, which is going to be dropped for support in may of 2022. so in that case, root access is nice. previously i had a oneplus x, which the manufacturer promised a nougat update but never fulfilled it (we were stuck on marshmallow), so i decided "fuck it" and got a custom OS lol.

When I got the pixel 3a, I didn't bother rooting it for the first 2 years. Recently I decided to do so just to see what it was like. So far I'm loving it.

I used to be huge with rooting, modding and custom roms, especially in the early 2010s.

By the S8 and similar phones, the bootloaders were all locked, making it near impossible. Last phone I rooted was the Pixel 2 and it was because PS4 Remote Play needed root access since it was only for Xperia phones back then.

I don't even bother really checking if they're rootable anymore since ads are really the only thing I'd really want it for.

If we're talking strictly phones, then no. I'm not against it, just never looked into what it would be useful for me for. I did hack my 3DS a year or so ago though. I think I hacked my Wii years ago too.

Nice, never heard of DriveDroid. Is this your first time rooting? Or do you usually root your phones? Are there any other things you like to do with your phone while it's rooted?

When I made this thread I meant any kind of device. I didn't consider 3DS' at first, but that definitely qualifies.

I always purposely buy pixels or OnePlus devices because the manufacturers don't care if your root your phone or not. I also aim to buy them unlocked. I heard that Verizon locked phones tend to be hard to root, if not impossible.

I usually root them once the warranty expires anyway. It's also running a custom ROM, because Xiaomi still haven't released an official Android 11 ROM for it (or at least, hadn't yet last time I checked).

DriveDroid is an app that basically allows your phone to emulate a USB flash drive. The key difference from just "plugging in via USB and accessing the files through Explorer as you usually can" is that, if it outright appears to the OS as a flash drive, you can do things like using apps that read / write drive images, or boot from it, or for that matter emulate multiple flash drives on a single device, etc.

Root isn't really as big a deal on Android in general, though. You only really need it if you want to do that kind of really fancy stuff. It's not like on iOS where jailbreaking is necessary if you want to sideload apps; on Android, enabling sideloading is just a matter of changing a setting.
