Once you get to the DLC. It seems pretty universally agreed the base game is dog shit, but "supposedly" you should go through it to understand and appreciate the characters.

I just gave up personally and skipped the story as fast as I could and feel no regrets.

Of course, if you don't like MMO's then it'll never get good to you.

Well, I personally found it some of the worst story I've ever had to suffer through. Painfully dull was it at its best.

It wasn't story as much as set-up. Keep in mind they had to bundle in lore from 1.0 while fixing the huge mistakes they did. They also had to re-establish current characters like the scions while introducing new characters. On top of that they had to weave in three city-states and their stories/politics along with all the beast tribes.

Thats not even taking into account the main lore which is the primals, Ascians, Hydaelyn and Zodiark, and the warrior of lights role in everything.

So yeah I could understand why it would be painful, don't get me wrong.

Edit: Totally forgot Garlemald, Binding Coils of Bahamut and Crystal Tower. Seriously, they had to go over the fall of Dalamud and what the Garleans have been doing to Eorzea, as well as characters like Nero, Louisoix and Gaius. Yeah fucking hell, now I'm typing this all out its a wonder how they managed to fit everything in.

OH! Totally forgot. If you care about the story, please watch these videos. Goes over a lot of the stuff that happened pre 2.0 and will definitely help get your head around the massive lore and world.

About L20-30 it starts to get a little more interesting. L30-40 slows down a bit. L40-50 is more fun and sees the culmination of the base game story. The post ARR quests leading up to HW are probably the most tedious thing (wasnt so bad when they were drip fed to you with the patch cycles).

Gameplay wise its going to feel slow because theyve cut a lot of skills from the game over the years to keep there from being skill bloat at the max level. So you dont really have the same range of skills players did when it was just ARR and the max level was 50. Id say a lot of the jobs dont really start to shine until L60 but no idea how that will change with the new Endwalker expansion later this week.

Probably. I only came in like.. a year ago, and while the actual game itself is good I had come from the story content of SWTOR, which (imo) was excellent so was a massive downgrade and disappointment.

No issues if others liked it, or found it tolerable, but I just found myself switching off. Finally, I realised I recalled nothing from the past hour or whatever of cutscenes/dialogues once and decided to just start skipping and only paying attention occasionally. And likely would have dropped the game entirely otherwise.

I genuinely started enjoying it as soon as I could queue up for those 4-man dungeon runs, which was around.. level 17? That elevated the game a lot, especially since I just stumbled upon a guild with a bunch of nice casual players hanging out who would queue up with me. Also, being a tank or healer at that point will drastically shorten your queue times.

Yeah, I definitely enjoyed that aspect of it at least despite my gripes with the story.

Skip non-voiced cutscenes until you get to Heavensward. You will still know what is going on. Heavensward onward is great.

In terms of gameplay, around level 15 cause that's when you start going on dungeons, in terms of story it's a bit harder to say since ARR was a while for me but i would not skip it if i was you or at least if you do watch it at a later time cause there is a lot of elements that come into play on later expansions and i can tell you that the story for the expansions is great.

I don't recommend this if you care about story. There are a ton of scenes that will lose context especially Haurchefaunt scenes.

If you legit aren't enjoying the story now, just skip them til level 50 and find a synopsis somewhere. Does it set the story up for later? Yes, but that's irrelevant if they bore you so much you never even bother to get that far.

Just to let you guys know, the game will be down on Thursday for Endwalker early access being released on Friday. Your EXP values will be reset so make sure you level up the remaining exp bar to the next level if you don't want to spend time grinding it again..

ARR is slow, but still good. But yeah, the "award-winning" writing and stuff doesn't kick in until you get to Heavensward, which is at Lv50.

If you're at Lv7, you're in the slow paced stuff since you're supposed to just explore the world and get used to the mechanics. But if you want to just blaze through the main story, go ahead, but don't skip cutscenes if you actually care about the story.
