So obviously the way to go is to play on PC where you can go beyond 30FPS most of the time, if not all of the time with a top tier PC. (Idk if they release PC games that are so intensive that the most powerful PC can not run it at max at game launch.)

Anyway, besides that. I've often thought that if ALL games were made to be 60FPS at the MINIMUM, that would be great. Us always pushing the graphics boundary is keeping us at 30 FPS. Will it ever end?

If we stayed back one gen's worth of graphics, we could make locked 60FPS the standard and then graphics could continue to improve. But the fact that we always reach for the stars graphically really fucks that over.

So again to the fact that you can always play on PC and have both. This mostly solves that problem until you get to exclusives. Though there aren't that many exclusives these days, you still have to deal with games that are.

It's just a shame.

And thus I ask this. Do you think we will ever reach a point graphically where we can make 60FPS locked the new standard?

Some games won't do 60fps if you do the high fidelity options.

Next gen consoles will prob target 8k resolution so 30 fps would still be standard for max visual quality. 60 fps performance mode will be like 4k

I like collecting headphones and iems. My fave game of all time is DMC 3 SE on PC w/ style switch mod. IMO it the best button masher on earth

Yes. Fidelity will always take precedence over performance when it comes to mainstream consoles. You poor souls will barely catch up, and then 8k 30 fps will become the norm.

That is why its a good thing that performance preference is actually a setting that comes in the PS5 system settings by default. (I'm not sure about the xbox series X/S since I do not have one, but I'm sure that console also got a similar preference setting somewhere). Since the PS5 dropped, practically every native PS5 version of games has the option to prefer resolution or performance.

There is no doubt that later on in the console generation when the cross-gen games finally comes to a end that we will probably see the bigger AAA devs start forcing the typical checkerboard 4K with some raytracing tossed in at 30fps graphix!! showcases, but as long as the option exists to opt for none of the raytracing stuff @ 1080p and 60fps, then I will gladly take it. At the moment they are doing good on with having at least two options (the one game we did get that was forced 30fps, watch dog legions, got a patch back in june that added in a performance option to get 60fps), and having the preference setting gives me hope that this is something sony and microsoft will commit to for the rest of the generation. *crosses fingers since I really prefer framerate myself*

Frame timings are a bit crap, but it was a very nice update.

Yes, the solution would be to stop effing raising the video resolution and instead focus on pixel density. 1080p is fine, just increase the amount of pixels per inch on the 1920x1080 resolution and then you should be able to raise the fps rate much higher.

It's not a matter of if a console can handle 60fps. Any console can handle 60fps pretty easily. Including PS1 or PS2. The way it works is graphic fidelity and fps have an inverse relationship. As one goes up, the other goes down. So if any game is at 60fps, that means developers can improve the graphics further at the cost of the fps. So on the opposite side of things, if a game is at 30fps, they could sacrifice the graphics just a little to make it target 60 fps (unless they tie the frame rate to the graphics engine).

The reason most games were 30fps is because developers CHOSE 30fps as a target. They ask themselves, "Hmm. Higher graphics? Or higher fps?" and then choose graphics usually. Reason for that is probably mostly from a marketing standpoint. You can't see 60fps in a screenshot, but you can see if they pretty up the grass or water more.

it could have been worse tbh.

console marketing could still have been stuck with using bullshots or intentionally marketing PC ultra graphics with that of the target console.
