Yes. It's not the greatest Sonic game but it's also not the worst. And for a first attempt at 3d it went pretty well.

It's better if you go into it expecting "Flicky 2: Hedgehog Boogaloo"

But it does a few neat things. First, the soundtrack is fucking rad. Panic Puppet is a banger. Also, I like how the Flickies become increasingly irrelevant in the last few stages. First theyre not in robots, they're just in tubes. Then finally theyre not even there anymore. The manual flavored it as "Sonic is catching up to Robotnik, who doesnt have time to enslave the flickys anymore". It was probably some bullshit they had to handwave because of development deadlines, but as a kid it helped enhance a sense of urgency and tension as I was closing in on the final boss.

The other thing is that the last level, when they drop the Flicky mechanic entirely, is actually pretty damn fun. Really wonder what we could've gotten if they just committed to a "traditional" isometric platformer right from the start.
