I was born and raised in California.
I know for a fact my family had slavers in it's history (no, I'm not happy about this fact.) I imagine that's true for most middle-class and up Californians as many wealthy white people moved to the coasts.

It was illegal but Mormons brought slaves with them to CA. The slaves basically built San Bernardino and Riverside County and worked the orange groves and other agricultural jobs. The slaves had to raise the money to sue for their freedom themselves.

Well, that's assuming people will actually listen or even care if the full depth of the effects slavery and Jim Crow had on Black people in this country.

So the United States' western expansion wasn't funded by wealth gleaned from the slave trade? Huh.

They're not taught well enough apparently, judging by how people react whenever this topic is brought up.

The topics of slavery that are brought up are Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Underground Railroad, that's basically it. For the Civil Rights Movement its MLK, Rosa Parks, bus boycotts, lunch counters, that's it. There is no deep dive into these topics.

People are basically taught a very whitewashed version. Unless people take a college level course they don't get the full picture on the extent of just how horrible slavery was and how Jim Crow still is basically in effect today.

For example Central Park in NY, that was originally Seneca Village, a majority Black village where the residents were pretty well off, well it was destroyed and a park made over it.

Then Lake Lanier in GA is another example.

Plus, if they think racism is bad now, wait till the poor and middle class of every other race react to their black neighbors getting a million dollars, or whatever ridiculous number they're asking for.

Dems might get away with it in Cali without losing their seats, but if they start paying reparations, they wont win another national election for at least a decade or two.

During the 90s/2000s Sorbo was far from a D-List actor. He may be washed up now, but shows like Andromeda and Hercules had massive followings and were on a lot of channels.

Reparations for slavery really have never made sense. There are plenty of more relatively recent racial injustices that have affected still living people that would make much more sense to champion.

At this point it needs to be done. Every time Black people as a collective successfully "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps", racists always destroyed it and then made it near impossible to rebuild or reclaim. As another example, Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK. That was just one of many wealthy Black cities that were destroyed and never recovered.
