Should I watch the original 1927 movie first?

I dont think it matters which you watch first. The movie takes more ideas from the 1927 film than it does the manga it's based on but it's still enough of it's own thing. That said the anime film is very good but the 1927 film is a masterpiece.

Rock is awesome.

Metropolis the anime is great as an ode not only to silent films (note the vignettes and art nuveau) but also as an ode to the old style of Japanese animation & character design. So, the characters look a little more like Cyborg 009 or Astroboy than DB:Z or Akira. I really enjoyed that movie.

Definitely the best silent film I've seen as well. There are other greats, but I haven't seen anything quite on the scale of Metropolis. It has SO many special effects..... Back when they couldn't even sync dialogue. Omg

It came out the same year as the first full-length sound feature. It's very late silent era, almost to the point that you're saying it's the only great silent movie.

Interesting! You may be right. The argument stands in Metropolis's lasting contemporary legacy tho and how recognizable the Android is. I may be wrong, but do those films really hold the same merit? Still, I will stand corrected. Is it not Metropolis that comes up time and time again over the decades?

The scope of it tho ..

Their depiction of the future.

I would and did hesitate on making a definite judgement call there, saying it's the greatest silent or the first basically perfect movie. However, it's not exactly an uncommon notion...

Doesn't matter what you watch first, as long as you watch both of them. Very good movies, very much suggest some intoxicants for the silent film.

The social commentary is to die for.

I still like to play friedersen ;)

Especially considering the time the movie came out in.... If I recall, Fritz Lang fled Germany.

How long ago was this? An uncut copy of the film was discovered only a few years ago which added some 30 minutes or so to the run time.

It *felt* like it was approaching three hours, though I'm really not sure. Pretty sure it was a more original copy though

I wish I could go back and watch The General and The Passion of Joan of Arc for the first time again. Joan of Arc has probably one of the absolutely best performcances I've ever seen.
