Riksdagen has now voted to make Magdalena Andersson our new PM. Magdalena was chosen as new leader of the Socialdemocratic party 20 days ago.

She got the backing of her own party, the Green party, the Far-Left, the Neoliberal Center party and an independent MP.

The Conservatives, the Nationalists, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals voted against her.

Riksdagen is also voting on the State budget for 2022 today and it is unclear which budget proposal will win since the Neolibs might not support the SocDem-Green budget after their own budget is rejected.

Talented women have not been able to reach the top spot here until now. Some mediocre men have been in the way (not saying all our male PMs have been mediocre, but some).

6 of the 9 major party leaders are now women though.

Gender shouldnt matter though but it does.

Took way too long, even though its basically cheating since the people didnt vote for her.
Polling show strong public support for her though (50% for her, 40% for Kristersson and 10% for someone else). Well see in September what happens though. That election will be most exciting since 3 parties potentially could get voted out according to current polling.

I'm kinda surprised it didn't happen sooner tbh.
Our two largest parties, the ones who usually hold the Prime-ministership because of their size, have only had 1 female party leader each before this.

Mona Sahlin led the SocDems in opposition 2007-2010 and stepped down after the 2010 election since the ruling Right-wing coalition won a second term.

Anna Kinberg Batra led the Conservatives in opposition from late 2014 to October 2017. She resigned due to internal party plotting and backstabbing.

Okay. Wtf.

The Conservative-Far Right-ChristDem budget won 154-143 with the Liberals and Neoliberals abstaining.

Their hastily put together budget proposal is 20 billion in different spending/tax cuts compared to the SocDem-Green budget. Out of a total of 174 billion SEK. Magdalena says she will govern with the Right-wing budget but now the Greens are leaving the Government and are pissed off as fuck at the Neolibs (rightfully so). So Riksdagen will need to vote again on Magda???

It feels like the SocDems and the Far Right are the only ones actually interested in governing right now out of our 8 major parties. The Far Right since they are willing to form a Government unless the spineless Conservative leader who just cries and whines.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdalena_Andersson

On 24 November 2021, the Swedish Riksdag elected her as Sweden's first female Prime Minister, thereby ending Sweden's status as the only Nordic country never to have had a woman as head of an elected government. A few hours later, she resigned as her coalition collapsed after it failed to pass a budget and the Green party refused to govern with the oppositional budget.
WTF is going on here?

Im not 100% sure what its about. But first it was MP (green party) that left cuz they couldnt get the budget plans voted through (which is by the right), shortly after that Magda resigned.

Allow me to break it down for you all:

Magdalena Andersson was voted Prime-minister by her party the Socialdemocrats and the SocDem Government partner the Green party as well as by the Far-Left party and the neoliberal Centrist party.

Today was also the day for the vote of State budget for 2022.

Riksdagen had 5 different budget proposals to take into consideration:

* The SocDem-Green party budget.
* An add-on to the above budget where 20 billion of the 174 billion were different written by the Conservatives, the Far Right and the socialconservative Christian Democrats.
* The Far Lefts budget.
* The Neoliberals budget
* The Liberals budget.

The bottom 3 budgets were voted down with a run-up vote between the first two. The Far Left supported the SocDem-Green budget in the 2nd vote while the Libs and Neolibs abstained after their budgets were shot down. This made the Right-wing coalition add-on budget proposal the narrow winner.

The Green party has vowed to never support anything from the Far Right so they left the Government.

The Constitution says that a new vote must be held if a Government party leaves the Government so Magdalena followed the Constitution and resigned. All parties/MPs who supported her today now say they will support her again in a new vote so soon shell be back and with a single party minority Government.

Essentially the SocDems need to reform their own govt without the green party. I don't blame the greens for stepping out, in hindsight it looks like the only thing that could save them from falling out of parliament in the next election. Might be too little too late though.

That is the positive I try to think about in this mess. At least Riksdagen is active and voting on different issues constantly and not stuck in eternal gridlock with nothing happening.

Question 1: It kinda boils down to some parties not being willing to even talk with some parties. The Center Party in particular create messes by refusing to live in the real world. They neither wanna work with the Far-Left nor the Far-Right even though a Government cant be formed right now without support from one of those two parties. They supported Magdalena for PM but refused to vote for her budget since the Far-Left got one thing in it after negotiations with the Socialdemocrats: higher pensions for the poorest retired folk.

Question 2: Sweden still works well since Riksdagen has a lot of power over domestic issues and different broad coalitions agree on issue to issue. We also have a transition Government right now (the retiring PMs Government which has governed since October 2014). Our agencies are also independent compared to many other Western nations, they are less rocked by sudden Government changes.

I think that has more to do with the sudden political chaos. The oppositions budget proposal winning, the Green party leaving the Government which triggered Magdalenas resignation. Magda has been Minister of Finance for 7 years and is internationally known as a skilled economist.

Yes. She tried to make a government backed by the left and the liberals. How could that ever work (let's see what will happen in Germany...)? I mean, the liberals got pissed and voted against the left wing budget and approved the right wing budget with the other right wing parties. The prime Minister said she had no problem going with that budget. Then, the left wing party backing the government obviously revoked it's support.

We have negative parliamentarism as well, which means that a bill doesnt need a majority for it but it cant have a majority against it. This forces every party to actively try to present something since one of the alternatives in a vote on a bill will win unless there is strong consensus in the chamber to just kill the bill. This makes holding up many pieces of legislation unappealing and rather difficult.

scar the 1 posted...

I honestly cant grasp what that party is thinking right now. Its like we voted yes to a PM supported by the Far-Left so lets support a budget by the Far-Right to create balance. Utter insanity. And they are NOT coming out of this looking good in the eyes of the public.

More voters think the neoliberal Center party was wrong than right to allow the oppositional budget to win. Even among voters who vote for the oppositional Right-wing parties, only 6 out of 10 think they were right.

However, 55% think the Green party was right to leave the Government because of the budget vote.

My current thoughts are that it will be abysmal. MP and C both go hard for the young city woman with a university degree. MPs actions right now are more likely to attract that group than Cs imo. C have both burned their bridge with the Left and with the Right. Their broad center is looking mighty thin now.
