Of the company I work for said something to that effect this morning during a meeting, when talking about long hours people are working Saying how we're a team/family and we're doing the hard work in order to create a story for the future or some shit.
I just rolled my eyes sooo much when he said that. Like, fuck outta here man

I've once asked an employer like that for a day off. When asked why I said it was because I wanted to celebrate my birthday. He replied with "Why? I don't take days off for MY birthday". Told him to shove my job up his ass and quit.
Now whenever one of these "family" assholes asks why I want the day off I just reply "because I've earned those days as by government mandate".

Ah okay, yea, that certainly changes things. If you were in a new startup where the company succeeding or failing depended entirely on the individual actions of an extremely small team it'd be kind of shitty to have that attitude (or even take the job in the first place), but once you're hitting a few hundred that's a completely different story.
