I'm not concerned about the expac yet, it will be a while before I get to that anyway

But apparently they are setting up some official Australian servers so obviously I wanna use those
But I already paid for a sub last night and the expac is 2 weeks from now...
I only found out about these new servers because I googled "ff14 aussie servers" since I was gonna start tonight :/

fml

do they have like a server transfer service thats free? im fine playing with JPN ping and then switching to a new server
Or maybe it wont be worth playing on them because the existing servers have established communities...

Oceana servers wont be available for some time, likely early to mid next year.

When they do go live, therell be free transfers to those servers to help populate them. Itll fill up nicely so dont worry about the community aspect.

Tonberry and Kujata are the ones with the highest english speaking population, but Typhon also has a decent population since those two tend to be congested.

Everyone in our guild knows English, half know Chinese, 70% know Japanese (but none are native), and one person knows Thai. If we run content with just our guild (free company) it's in English, but for end game stuff with randos it's usually a Japanese speaking environment due to the nature of joining random parties. Sometimes we team up with a Chinese guild based out of Tokyo, so then everyone is speaking Chinese (they're not on Mandragora, but we're on the same server so we can make a cross world party).

Oh right, I should mention there are a ton of commands that autotranslate. So although you should learn to say at the start of every game and at the end of every game, you can use the autotranslate to select whatever the English version is from a menu. It also covers stuff like heal me, Rez me, etc.

Oh and make sure to set your languages in game to English and Japanese even if you don't know Japanese because otherwise you will never find groups using the content finder (since 95% of people have it set to just Japanese).

Cat girls and dragon girls are the most popular race/gender combos so right you are. Am dragon girl myself (though still a bit annoyed at how much they resemble humans anyway)

This is one strength WoW has over it. WoW has a lot of diversity in its races.

But this is also the case in WoW. All gear is made with the human model in mind, so a lot of it looks like outright garbage on races that deviate too far from it.

This is the one that always comes to mind for me:

No.
Patron diety used to matter, but not anymore. Used to get elemental resistance and whatnot based on which God you picked but they patched it out.

As for starter class, Lancer is fun. Dunno if you wanna be a Healer since I gave up my only healing job after like a day lol.

Leveling stuff up is easy for whatever your main class is, but will pretty much boil down to grinding dungeons for anything else.

Your starter class determines your starting town though. Depends on if you want to live in the forest town, the pirate town, or the desert town.

how does switching jobs work?

i think that your level drops to 1 or something if youve never played that job, but what about your gear?

if you level a caster, can you basically swap between any and be ok-ish since you already probably have caster gear? as opposed to trying to level a dragoon first and then switching to white mage and you would have no robes

Yeah your level drops to 1 on the new class. Each piece of gear has a set of classes that can equip it (except for weapons, those can only be equipped by the one class each), if you don't have any just pop into an NPC and buy some stuff. Make ample use of the gear set feature to save your classes and jobs and switch quickly between them

Sure, whenever you need to pump those item levels that's a viable strategy. At level caps (50, 60 etc.) you can often buy the strongest gear for that level off of an NPC with special currency that you get from doing content after lv50

You can only turn in a quest if you're equal in level as the quest to prevent people from doing a level 40 quest, switching to a class that's level 6 and getting a crap ton of experience, so yes you'll have to go back and do lower level quests and levequests. But the nice thing is that each starting town has it's own quest line so for the first three classes you level it's pretty easy.

you'll have to grind the new class up to match whatever level is required by the MSQ. From levels 1 to 15 you can usually get by just doing your hunting log, fates and maybe a levequest here and there. From level 15 upwards you can start mixing dungeons into the grind; if you're a healer or tank, spamming dungeons is pretty quick, but as a DPS you'll take 5-10 minutes to enter a dungeon pretty much everytime, so it's a bit more annoying. You can queue up and do Fates/Levequests/sidequests/hunting log/pretty much anything else while you wait.
You could also take advantage of the daily roulettes for leveling up (especially the Leveling one) as they give a good burst of EXP.
It's been a while since I grinded all of my classes up from scratch so I'm not sure if some new method to level has shown up since then lol

Oh yeah and definitely do class/job quests as they unlock new skills

Yeah, each class has its own level, so you have to level each one up individually.

But you can switch between them anytime in the character menu, and your equipment will be saved to whatever class as long as you save it before switching to something else.

If you go to the tutorial giver in the Inns, and complete all the tutorials, you'll get a ring that gives you a 30% EXP bonus for levels up to 30, which will come in handy at the start. (I feel like at this point they should give another ring that does the same up to lv60)

So it's feasible to level up all jobs without resorting to just grinding mobs? It's sounding like I should do the MSQ as a DPS and use sidequests and stuff for a DPS and then I could level a tank & healer later since they get quick queues

Yeah in general fighting enemies won't actually give you exp at all. Only dungeons and MSQ will.

Tanks and Healers get real quick queues yeah since they're who everyone needs. If you do your daily dungeons you'll level them up relatively quickly (and also make a good amount of money from it as well).

Yeah, the exp you get from just killing stuff in the overworld is just not high enough to warrant grinding on them. The only exception is Blue Mage, which gets like a 100x exp multiplier from world mobs so that's the best way to level them up. Your strategy is pretty much sound

Depends on the caster. Summoner (Arcanist) is getting a complete rework come Endwalker and will be almost an entirely new job, and has gotten positive feedback from the media tour. Current Summoner is janky but still very fun. Black Mage I wouldn't suggest because you change your rotation every like 10 levels, and takes well into the 60s and 70s before it actually starts to *feel* good. Red Mage, IIRC, requires you to hit level 50 on another job, but its one of the easiest jobs to play and very appreciated in progression due to instant raise.

Dragoon is a solid melee DPS to start with, but you don't get your AOE attack until later than I think any other job, so it might feel a little bad in early dungeons. But theyre easy to learn, fun, and you provide good raid buffs.

I'd suggest Arcanist/Summoner, at the very least because you also get to level Scholar, a healing job at the same time.
