I'm in South Carolina and the vaccination rate here is actually not bad for a Southern state. However, the Covid death rate is high so when the unvaccinated people here get the virus they tend to die.

It does, but of course most people don't die. Even in high risk middle aged populations the risk of death is like 5-20%. So probably not enough unvaccinated people will die to really change the %. Plus it takes months/years for everyone to get exposed.

I think the Southern US where I'm based at has the lowest rates among the rich countries, shit is legit sad to watch.

Yeah NZ has hit 80% (of over 12s) with 2 doses in most of the country this week, which is great. Cases are leaking out around the country but hospital occupancy numbers seem to be flat so for now which is great.
