I think it would depend on how many times you used it, and the method you used in selecting victims. If you used it too often, eventually something like your web searches or knowing the victims would lead the police to you. You'd need to randomize the method and times of death and stagger them quite a bit to avoid that happening. You really wouldn't be able to use it for personal vendettas unless you did it sparingly and were separated by time and distance from the targets quite a bit.

Hardly anybody gets a trial in the US, so all they'd have to do is convince a prosecutor it was you and you just won't tell them how you did it. If you plead guilty, you go to prison. If you don't plead guilty, you sit in jail for years on bail you can't pay until you get a trial, a trial in which you still might be found guilty without hard any evidence.

The point is more that he got too cocky. Like most actual serial killers, he got overconfident and started making mistakes because getting away with it was too easy at first. By the end he's basically getting off on the idea that he can be so sloppy and they still can't prove it's him.

Presumably the same thing would happen to anyone who felt arrogant enough to decide they were qualified to play judge, jury, and executioner for the world for long enough. Power corrupts, etc etc.

Well, for one thing, he would have been arrested in Japan, not the US.

And even in the US, if you were arrested and charged and the police were all like "He's guilty but we're not going to tell you how he did it", any good defense lawyer would have the case dismissed out of hand in about 20 minutes. And Light's not poor or "ethnic", so he'd probably have a good lawyer.

The real problem is that, in a scenario where you are apparently magically killing people from a distance, you'd never be arrested. You'd almost certainly get "disappeared" by one group or another trying to figure out how you did it. Which would likely involve a lot of torture - and probably some dissections, because they'd have no way of knowing if it was an innate ability of your own or something you were using as a tool. So you'd wind up wishing you'd just been arrested and left to rot.
