A 30-year-old man Asian man was beaten with sticks by three men and two women in a Manhattan hate crime attack, police said Thursday. The assault one incident in a 343% increase in hate crimes against Asians thus far this year happened 10:30 p.m. Oct. 23 on Fifth Ave. near W. 31st St. What are you doing here, Asian? the victim reported the suspects saying. The hateful crew then repeatedly punched and assaulted the victim with sticks, police said. He suffered a head injury and was treated at Bellevue Hospital. Police counted 474 hate crimes in the city this year through Nov. 7 96% more than the 242 reported in the same time frame of 2020. Of those 474 crimes, some 127 involved Asian victims compared with 28 in the same period of 2020. That works out to an increase of 353%. The NYPD earlier this year created a unit aimed specifically at dealing with such hate crimes and have tried to encourage Asians who may be from countries where they distrust authority to come forward if they have been victimized.
