Aren't the Zora from OOT the saltwater ones? I thought the freshwater Zora were the monster from the black lagoon looking motherfuckers from the 2d games

Because Nintendo doesnt care about the Zelda timeline. They only reference another game when they feel like it and are not afraid to smash it apart when they want to make a game that wouldnt fit.

BotW is set so far ahead of everything that there's no real point in trying to make it fit in anywhere. Especially since it carries elements of all of the different timelines.

It's more accurate to say that humans and modern apes share a common ancestor that we all branched from. Granted, said ancestor was likely ape-like anyway, so...

Humans and monkeys are both primates. But humans are not descended from monkeys or any other primate living today. We do share a common ape ancestor with chimpanzees. It lived between 8 and 6 million years ago. But humans and chimpanzees evolved differently from that same ancestor. All apes and monkeys share a more distant relative, which lived about 25 million years ago.

The Zora -> Rito lore was absolutely stupid anyway, I'd be glad if they ditched it.

While we're at it, turning them all into Falco was also stupid. Their Windwaker designs were unique and great. Now they're just generic furries. >_>

if you have two (or more) groups of a species isolated from each other for a long time, in different environments, they can evolve differently.

and if you throw in some magic, one of those groups starts flying a few generations later.

He doesn't understand the difference between cladistics and evolutionary taxonomy, the two competing schools of taxonomy. Under the latter, physically distinct lineages of animals (or anything else for that matter) are treated as a distinct "type" of animal. That's why in the past people would speak of birds as a distinct type of animal that evolved from dinosaurs. Nowadays cladistics is more popular, especially when you're dealing with extinct groups. That's partially why birds are now referred to as a living lineage of dinosaurs.

Hence, under the increasingly more popular method of classification, humans are considered a physically distinct lineage of great apes rather a distinct "type" of animal. The same can be said of apes in general in their relationship to monkeys: they're essentially just highly modified Old World monkeys.

The guardian was literally just Falco but in a different game, it was uncanny.

Also the windwaker designs weren't really unique... looked like just someone cosplaying wearing a beak of a bird like some weird halloween kids birthday party

I think he just took it as humans evolved from modern day apes (meaning something like the Bonobo has always existed and humans are a result of its mutated offspring). What I assume you meant is that humans and modern day apes all descended from a common ancestor, which we would also classify as an ape.

Anyway, the answer is that games and pretty much any media are veeeeery loose with their interpretation of evolution (see: Pokmon).

It's called evolution, but it's basically just metamorphosis. (This is really obvious for the bug types whose second evolution is literally a cocoon)

In fairness, I don't think Wind Waker means to imply that the Zora naturally evolved into the Rito. The fact that that goddesses flooded Hyrule with an ocean and fish can't survive in it always made me think that they transformed the Zora too.

Evolution doesn't require one species to go extinct for another to form.

Scenario: you have two populations of Zora and a mountain raises out of the sea/lake/whatever over time separating the populations. Maybe one side stays wet so the Zora there remain effectively the same, while it starts getting dry on the other side. It becomes favourable to become bird people for some reason.

Then if they are interacting again now in the present, maybe that geological barrier is gone or they found a way around it.

Nitpicking over Breath of the Wild lore is so incredibly pointless. More so than any other Zelda game, if you can believe it. It's intentionally vague to the point of Nintendo not even revealing which branch of the timeline it takes place after. There's just no way to know for sure, and they put a bunch of stuff from each branch in there so that you can easily make a case for any of them. Something about it helping bring out that sense of adventure players reported that they hadn't felt since the original NES game.
