I can understand the latter entirely, and I get that the former is still a touchy subject, but frankly there's a lot of stuff about 9/11 still being dragged out that feels really distasteful and cynical and I think it's a worthwhile endeavour to talk about it - even if it can get a little glib. Like, would the people who died in the attacks approve of America using their deaths twenty years later to justify excessive surveillance and this "forever war" mentality that keeps military spending high, spending on civilian resources like libraries and schools low and people employed whose job it is to look at scans of your naked body and the bodies of your kids every time you want to get on a plane? No disrespect to the victims, but let's look at what it looks like to keep 9/11 alive as if it only happened yesterday. Especially when we have more modern crises where more Americans have died daily, for weeks and months at a time, than who died in 9/11. It's especially distasteful because the same people who trot out 9/11 every year pretend these modern crises aren't a big deal at all. One of them justifies fear and constant global conflict, and the other one doesn't - so COVID is a fake liberal plot to put ghosts in your blood that barely hurts anyone, whereas 9/11 is still an excuse to spill foreign blood on their own soil. But with that being said, the meme was pretty glib, so I can understand how it could had led to me getting warned. I'm currently in the process of getting out in the world more. Hopefully gonna take up cycling every couple Fridays or something, when I can get out of town to a major city that has those rent-a-bike programs. Somewhere that isn't as stifling as where I live.
