I'm a very picky eater. But not because I want to be. I actually find it pretty frustrating. And the potential embarrassment it could cause makes me avoid eating dinner at friends' houses or at restaurants where I haven't been before and I'm not sure what menu items I'll be able to stomach.

The problem is that my body, for some ungodly reason I cannot fathom, decides to react violently and immediately whenever I taste certain flavors or even just certain textures. Some smells alone (such as vinegar and most seafood) are often enough to make me gag. If you give me a french fry that's been dipped in ketchup, I will literally puke on the spot. I won't even make it as far as swallowing. My body just says "nope" and it's over.

I've tried all kinds of things to get over it or just suppress it, but nothing's worked. It's made me paranoid of trying anything new, which has of course only made it even worse and narrowed my food options even further over the years. Hell, even some things I used to absolutely love will now make me sick to my stomach. Like I couldn't get enough of my mom's mac & cheese when I was a kid. Give me 1 spoonful now and I'll be dry heaving into the garbage bin within seconds. That one's not the flavor, though, it's the texture. It's too...I dunno..."slimy" I guess? Doesn't quite feel like the right word, but I don't know how to describe it.

And before anybody asks, it's got nothing to do with allergies.

im similar, but I think its the texture most for me. I can stomach the taste most times but the texture causes me to gag. I cant deal with lettuce at all, Ill just spit out the whole bite or start gaging it out. No idea why.

Most annoying thing is people who say certain things have no taste. Ya, thats gonna suddenly solve all my problems.

Even if a person doesn't want to try a food. Who cares, it's their loss. The example OP gave about someone throwing out a meal because it happened to be close to something they don't like can get fucked though.

This except that I like seafood

People need to shut the fuck up about picky eaters. It's harder on us that it is on you.

I was recently diagnosed with EOE and I see my son going through the same thing. I wonder if as a baby I had some mental trauma from gagging on food so I became very particular. Picky eating is a mental disorder and not something we can simply get over.

Is it bullying? Maybe. But I feel bullied when people are unreasonably difficult, so it balances out.

It's a mental disorder. I will go hungry before trying to choke down something I don't like (and I won't complain about it). You wouldn't understand if you don't deal with it.

As a non-picky eater, I'm not going to shit on picky eaters because it's always down to preferences. The ones I do pick on or joke about are the ones that purposely make their life harder. I had a friend who hates cheese, but always orders pizza with cheese because it gives a certain taste he likes while he is gagging by taking the cheese off the pizza.

That's not being a picky eater, that is literally life and death a lot of the time.

Another type of picky eaters I make fun of are ones that lie about being allergic to a certain food. When I went back to the town back in the south I grew up in, I was surprised how many of them claimed to be allergic to "vegetables" (and yes almost all of them were either overweight or borderline obese). Like just tell the truth you don't like vegetables.

Im only picky with onions, which sucks because onions go with just about everything. But my grandma was a notorious bitch and I gagged eating onions on a burger once. So her plan was to force me to eat a fresh onion, couldnt leave till it was gone. She was very abusive, legit beat my ass because I got hit by a car and didnt tell her.

Except that there are exceptions to this.

A lot of people's "I dont like this" is based off one instance of not liking a certain food. Food is sourced from endless places. Apples here taste different from apples there. Also combinations matter too. Someone who may not like apple may like apple when its combined with brown sugar, cinnamon, and baked into a pie. Many foods given to people to "try" are given to people standalone. Many foods arent meant to taste great by themselves such as onions. Normal people dont just hork down onions. We have them cooked into a savory dish. The last element other then Source and Combination is Age. As we age we loose tastebuds and our tastes change with that, if theres someone claiming they dont like a food who hasnt tried it since they were a child, lmao.

Also I dont know how you fix something like this because it may be too deeply ingrained in their upbringing to change but some people are just doomed to be picky because their parents didnt make them eat their veggies, or anything they claim they "dont like". Bought them whatever they wanted, chicken nuggies and poptarts, etc. My parents just said "whelp that what is for dinner, eat it or go hungry".
