French police arrested Aminata Diallo of the Paris St.-Germain (PSG) women's soccer team on Wednesday in connection with an investigation into an attack on one of her teammates. The teammate, Kheira Hamraoui, was pulled from a car last Thursday by masked men who beat her legs with iron bars. PSG confirmed that Diallo was taken into police custody, but the club did not name the alleged victim. On the night of the attack, Hamraoui had accepted a ride in Diallo's car with two other PSG teammates after leaving a team dinner in Paris. After they arrived at Hamraoui's home, two men wearing balaclavas pulled Hamraoui from the car and hit her on the legs for about two minutes, French sports newspaper L'quipe reported. The two men escaped following the assault, and Hamraoui was taken to a hospital. She reportedly had stitches in her leg wounds but did not suffer career-threatening injuries. However, she was not able to make her scheduled start in PSG's Champions League matchup against Real Madrid on Tuesday. Diallo, 26, has been with PSG since 2016, although she was loaned to the Utah Royals in 2020 and Atltico Madrid earlier in 2021. The incident with the PSG players recalls the 1994 assault on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. The ex-husband of skater Tonya Harding orchestrated an attack on Kerrigan, who was hit in the legs with a police baton by a man after a practice for the U.S. championships. Kerrigan withdrew from the championships because of her injuries, and Harding went on to win. Harding has maintained her innocence regarding the attack, but she pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution's investigation into the assault. PSG said in a statement that it "acknowledges that Aminata Diallo was remanded in police custody this morning by the Versailles SRPJ as part of the proceedings initiated following an assault last Thursday evening against the club's players." The statement continued, "Paris Saint-Germain condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence committed.
