I feel like there was a time and place before we had all these modern awesome apple breeds like pink lady and cosmic crisp and snapdragon, where red delicious actually were the best apple, hence the name.

They're not my favorite but there's worse out there.

The hatred is overdone for sure the red delicious you get from your typical grocery store or cafeteria where its probably out of season and shipped from hundreds of miles away is pretty bland no doubt. But a fresh one right off of the tree is definitely refreshing. Still probably a lower tier apple regardless.

I don't know the cultivar, but I get me the same bag of apples everytime. Very sweet, tangy, slightly softer than usual.

you usually need something more tart for good applesauce, a red delicious applesauce would be very flavorless

How about a blend between like 3-4 different apples?

When it's crisp and at just the right ripeness, it's the best apple.

Outside of that small window, it's awful.

Cosmic Crisp is obv the best apple type and Im definitely not biased because I totally dont work for/went to school at the university that developed it and the university/state benefits with sales.

Theyre the most widely-distributed apple while also considered the worst by many, the name adds a lot of injury in that regard

they were good back in the 40s when they were first developed. but as grocery stores have prioritized looks and shippability over taste (since you cant tell what it'll taste like until after you bite into it) they've been manipulated to favor both. the original red delicious wasn't a ruby red apple with thick skin and a mealy texture, it looked and tasted more like a sweet tango or honeycrisp.

I prefer Honeycrisp, if they aren't covered in fucking bruises. Fuji are a distant second.

Red delicious' skin has too much of a thick, waxy texture.

I... honestly couldn't tell you the difference between them and any other red apple.

Maybe if I taste tested them all in a row...

It's fine. Not necessarily the best of apples, but it feels like the people dismissing it as mealy and bland are just getting them from bad orchards. I've had apples of loads of varieties that have been mealy and bland, and plenty of red delicious that have been juicy and refreshing.

my mom likes to use either red delicious or gala for homemade applesauce. they are good, but don't come out very saucy. more chunky. but that's the way she likes it.

They're like honeycrisp but even juicier and more tart. So if you like sweet over tart, you might not enjoy them as much as honeycrisp.
