Yes

It's just like when I heard some schools were going to replace all their analog clocks with digital because the kids couldn't tell time. Educate instead of dumbing things down to make life easier.

A few months ago my job brought in a new kid (16-17 years old), and one day when he was told to sign his name he didn't know how. He's going to the same high school I did and now they're not teaching cursive. I learned cursive in elementary.

Cursive really isn't necessary. At all.

Like yeah signatures, but why? Who said "This has to be cursive, you can't print your name!"? What purpose does that serve?

I think it's pathetic that there are young people who don't know how to sign their names. Like do a better schools.

Its not like they even spent long on it when they taught it, at least not that I can recall. It wasnt important enough that it took, I only remember a few of the simplest letters. Maybe try and get people to know how to sign their names, and thats about it.

had to learn it in the second or third grade, and then never had to use it again.

it serves no real purpose, from my experience - it's annoying to learn (as a kid) and it's annoying to read (as an adult).

personally, I'd get rid of it.

I know, right?

Like, there was a poll of local middle schoolers and the list of things they didn't know was appalling.

They couldn't smith a horse shoe, work in a mill, operate a telephone switch board, build a sun dial, speak Akkadian, craft a flint spear...

Nobody ever even did actual standardized cursive. Ends up being some barely legible(even more so then what you are "supposed" to do) stylized/shaky hand nonsense.

I don't think I've ever seen a hiring manager pull out a magnifying glass and inspect the penmanship on a job application signature line like it's a fucking autograph by George Washington.

In a world where people use pens less and less?

And even if it's faster... so what? Is there a gun to your head when you sign something? Are you accepting an offer you can't refuse? Why is it necessary to sign in cursive when print is just a little bit slower?

Cursive was always lame. Never used it outside of being forced to in school and signing my name, the only actual use it had ever had.

Teach typing instead.

I got a lot out of learning cursive. Growing up I had a number of pen pals from across the country and we would write letters of love and friendship in cursive. Sure, we also used AOL instant messenger but it was very special and intimate to receive a letter from someone where you could see their personality expressed in the artform of handwriting. These letters are things I still treasure and its somewhat of a shame that's its going out of fashion with younger generations.

I can vouch for this, learning cursive helped with my fine motor skills and my handwriting is very good. I can barely read the handwriting of younger folks these days.

Even if its completely useless? Should we teach them how to use a phonograph too? How about a pager? The lesson on how to put songs on their mp3 player is really going to keep them on the edge of their seats

Outside of maybe school or as a very specific art style, I don't really see the practically behind cursive writing.
People don't write letters towards one another anymore and most employers want everything done by computer...
