I wish the premium edition didn't sell out in two and a half nanoseconds. It seems better than the half-assed shit that the premium editions of Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal, and Catherine: Full Body were. Catherine: Full Body didn't even have a thing to slide the steelbook into, so the spine for that game on my shelf is just a pink blob without the PS4 logo or game title.

I'm really skeptical of how the performence will be, I hate how abysmally poor the switch is in terms of hardware.

well it's a 3ds game ported to the switch, so presumably performance will be fine

this game is part of the mainline SMT series so it focuses more on rpg elements and less on dating sim type stuff if that's not your thing

Yeah, the pure SMT games tend to have little to no simulated social life or time management, and the time you'd have spent on that is instead spent on making sure you have the right enemies with the right skills so you can move from one cutscene waxing philosophy about mankind to the next cutscene waxing philosophy about mankind.

Mead, have you never played any of the core SMT games? You. are. missing. out. 1, 2, and 3: Nocturne are all classics. Nocturne's atmosphere is *chef's kiss*.

There are mechanical similarities, but beyond that they honestly have little in common unless we're talking about SMTIV, which... look, some people like it but it was such cringe to me that I couldn't bear it, and I gave it like a good six hours of time. It's also the closest the core SMT has come to Persona, so no wonder. Ugh.

Core SMT is great, and I'm not saying this as a long-term fan; I got into the series like... last year. Strange Journey was good, too. Sorta like SMT: Aliens. Nocturne a tonal masterpiece and the first two games were very unusual for their time and still hold up quite well, imo.

Edit: I just played Nocturne this year, ftr. And I liked it so much that I went for every ending (there are six). I'd avoided the series because I'd heard it was really difficult and that was a massive mistake on my part. I wish I'd tried them out sooner; it was stupid of me to let the reputation of their difficulty turn me off. Decided to give them a chance because I really liked Darkest Dungeon 1 and figured that they might hit a similar itch.

From the ones I'm familiar with so far, I'd definitely recommend:
SMT 1 (if you like retro games).
SMT 2 (if you like retro games).
SMT 3: Nocturne.
SMT: Strange Journey (either version is okay but the original is considered to be better written).
SMT: Digital Devil Saga 1-2 (Story is deliberately vague for a huge portion which is frustrating, strong Hindu themes, good games if particularly eccentric, the characters are fucking weird for a reason, I swear).

I still have a lot more to check out but yeah, those are all definitely worth looking into.

I've had SMTIV for ages (I bought it when that promotion was on where registering both it and FE13 gave you $30 eshop credit, if that dates it), but I still haven't played it. I've had Devil Survivor Overclocked for even longer, and only played like half an hour of it before getting distracted by other games. I should really play both.
