Moreso, by far, than how I feel whenever people throw an apostrophe-s at the end of words all willy-nilly rather than using the proper spelling. No, really, good on folks for getting compensated for being wronged.

Zero legal rights to any settlement or suit.. they broke the friggin' law by coming over illegally

If word goes around they actually received the money, then most illegals will want something in return too

Just because people break the law doesn't mean you get to mistreat them. You learn this stuff in kindergarten.

They also weren't illegals, they petitioned for political asylum at the border.

"The lawsuits stem from a policy under former President Donald Trumps administration, in which immigrants seeking political asylum from Mexico were separated from their families at the border between 2017 and 2018, and defendants are seeking compensation for their alleged trauma."

But a Half-Million? That's like a Billion in Pesos or something...It kinda sounds like the 'Wet Foot/Dry Foot' policy US have (or had, not sure if it's still a thing) with Cuba if any of them make it to mainland US

Ah, yes. Pay them less because they aren't citizens. Totally moral and justified.

The whole story seemed clearly outlandish, considering how many people would have been eligible.

Family separately literally literally existed because they were trying to avoid mistreatment. If the parents are going to prison, the children need to be detained separately. Otherwise you're effectively arguing that no parent should ever go to prison.

I mean, the suckers -ahem- us taxpayers have been giving out free money for a long time. Cant blame anyone for taking advantage of their ignorance. I collect money from the suckers all the time too.

In fact I'd personally like to thank any taxpaying us citizens in this thread for the money they give me that I absolutely do not earn or need to survive. Please continue to let our country bleed you dry for the benefit of others while of you slide below the poverty line in droves.

Trumpers should be chomping at the bit for these people to settle. There's no way in hell these two administrations will not be shredded in court, and it will be well-deserved. Can't wait to hear you guys piss and moan when the government pays out in the multi-millions to each individual instead of less than half a mil.

The government has sovereign immunity, so it is doubtful the migrants can successfully sue. Paying a bunch of foreign nationals that broke the law, even if we mistreated them is not a particularly thrilling prospect. I would just shaft them and be done with it, but there will be enough political pressure that no doubt we will pay out, but less hopefully.

Feel free to email the Justice Department with your suggestion that they take this to court and then refuse to pay out when they inevitably lose, then. I find it really fucking funny that you think the worst thing that could happen in this instance is that the US government loses some money, and not what would be brought to light during the proceedings... oh, and let's not forget the millions and millions of dollars for each of these 900+ cases going to court instead of being settled, lol. So much for avoiding expenses.

It's cool that you support US government agencies violating the rule of law with impunity. Big cuck energy.

You can sue government agencies, which is what has been done here. Please stop pretending you understand US law; if it could not be done, the over 900 lawsuits here would have already been thrown out.
They would not be negotiating settlements if the case could not be made.

Paying a bunch of foreign nationals that broke the law,
How many times does it have to be explained that they DID NOT break the law? People have the legal right to cross borders to seek asylum and the law is very clear on this subject.

Jesus, do any of you know fucking anything about the law?

Edit:
The Convention further stipulates that, subject to specific exceptions, refugees should not be penalized for their illegal entry or stay. This recognizes that the seeking of asylum can require refugees to breach immigration rules.
Prohibited penalties might include being charged with immigration or criminal offences relating to the seeking of asylum, or being arbitrarily detained purely on the basis of seeking asylum. Importantly, the Convention contains various safeguards against the expulsion of refugees. The principle of non-refoulement is so fundamental that no reservations or derogations may be made to it. It provides that no one shall expel or return (refouler) a refugee against his or her will, in any manner whatsoever, to a territory where he or she fears threats to life or freedom. Finally, the Convention lays down basic minimum standards for the treatment of refugees, without prejudice to States granting more favourable treatment. Such rights include access to the courts, to primary education, to work, and the provision for documentation, including a refugee travel document in passport form. Most States parties to the Convention issue this document, which has become as widely accepted as the former Nansen passport, an identity document for refugees devised by the first Commissioner for Refugees, Fridtjof Nansen, in 1922.

The Trump administration's policy violated US law, international law, and probably multiple treaties as well. They will get FUCKED in court, and the court costs alone will vastly outweigh these settlements.

Almost every country has sovereign immunity including the US. The US can always waive it, but it does not have to. The lawyers suing are hoping they can put enough political pressure to have the government bend.

The migrants abuse the amnesty laws by illegally entering the US through unestablished channels and if they get caught claim amnesty. I have no respect for these people that try to find loopholes to try to cut in front of the people that are going through the official immigration process. They ruin it for everyone.
