On Tuesday night, Democrat Michelle Wu became Bostons first female and Asian American mayor, ending the citys 200-year reign of electing white males to that role. 36-year-old Wu beat out fellow Boston city councilor Annissa Essaibi George overwhelmingly, capturing over 60 percent of the vote. In the run up to election day, Wu secured major endorsements from both of the states U.S. senators, Elizabeth Warren, Wus former law professor at Harvard Law, and Ed Markey. She also received endorsements from Bostons acting mayor Kim Janey and Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley. Wu focused her mayoral campaign on issues of equity like rent stabilization, free public transit and ending chronic homelessness. She also advocated for implementing a city-level green new deal. All of those issues appeared to work in her favor, with polling just days ahead of election day indicating she carried a 30-point lead over Essaibi George.

During Wus victory speech Tuesday night to supporters she said, We are ready to become a Boston that doesnt push people out, but welcomes all who call our city home. Were ready to be a Boston where all can afford to stay and to thrive. And, yes, Boston is ready to become a Green New Deal city. Wu has been steeped in Boston politics, in 2016 before running for mayor she was the citys first Asian American to serve as president of the city council. She represents the changing demographics of the city, herself a daughter of immigrants who moved to the U.S. from Taiwan. The latest Census Bureau count showed how diverse Bostons population became, with the Black or African American population growing by 25 percent, the Asian population growing by 10 percent and the Hispanic population growing by 20 percent. Overall the citys total population went up by approximately 9.4 percent.

wait, that video is saying she's also the first person of color to be elected mayor of Boston - does that mean Boston has only had white mayors so far?

if so, this would mean it's the first time a non-white man would be elected as mayor, which is pretty big.

Why does it matter if she's a democrat

Like why can't we just start leaving that part out? You either like her policies or you don't

This is especially true if you count college students, the amount of Chinese and Indian living in Boston has grown like crazy in the past decade.
