But HR was suppose to ask everyone what their pronouns were, if they had visual or hearing impairments and what other languages but they "ran out of time" so everyone has big blank name tags with just their name in little font compared to the tag.

People are starting to "decorate" their name tags with all the space to mock management for not personalizing it as they should have...

My 15 yr old had a substitute teacher last week.
He raised his hand, she called his name and he said miss... before he could even say her name she stopped him and told him my pronouns are they & them..

I told him next time you have her to just tell her you rather go sit in the deans office for class and to get up and walk out. If the school has an issue with it they can call me..

That's funny.

Kinda sad when you think about management's possible intentions though.

Thats annoying that your store didnt put the effort into that, I got a couple buddies who are team leads or ETLs and they told me how excited some of their team members were to be able to put their pronouns and languages on their name tags.

I was annoyed that they insisted we use the new name tags yet they didnt get them personalized which was the point.

They get on me for stuff im suppose to do but they fuck things like this up.

Im going to put "awesome" on mine (with a sticker so i can rip it off if they raise hell) so it says "Travis Awesome" (because we have so much space on them)

If they say anything ill bitch "well since you didnt personalize them i did. Am i not awesome!?"

Im petty.

You want to give your pronouns? Fine.

But if people ever try to force me to give mine, I'm going to be conflicted and likely will resist.

In premise, it's not the worst thing in the world. But in practice it seems to be a social conformity experiment where people try to prove they have power over you by insisting you change your behavior.

And I don't play that game.

Another coworker always had "10+ YEARS AT TARGET" on his old name tag but it barely fit. He put it on the new name tag and there was so much space it looked very normal.

This is just referencing how much space there is on em.

I see it no different than correcting someone if they pronounce your name wrong.

You were called something that was incorrect. You corrected them. That should be the end of the interaction.

Also, I would assume if the teacher is that adamant about it, they should have introduced themselves to the class beforehand. Since it was a sub, I would guess they said something along the lines of "Hello, my name is _____ and I'll be your substitute teacher today."

It's then on the kids to call them by that name.

What bull shit? It seemed like a rather quick exchange (oh ok, my bad. Anyway I had a question about). Youre worried about him not getting his question answered (which Im sure was quickly answered simply seconds after that non issue), but then you want him to skip the entire class and just go sit in the deans office? Youre not worried about his education in this case at all so dont try and play that card lol.

if he had pronounced their name wrong and they corrected him before answering the question would you demand he go sit in the principals office instead? What makes this case different?

That story didnt make sense. The teacher would have already introduced themselves and he would have just called them by that name. It wasnt a situation to use pronouns and they would have said them on introduction if it was such a big deal.

Yeah i know you made it up.

Yeah it's new, awkward, and clumsy at first, but you get used to it, it's completely optional, and it helps people feel okay.

This is a good learning experience for me. I can and should have phrased my statement more judiciously.

I am pro creating environments where behavior such as expressing pronouns feels safe, all people including trans should feel accepted and welcome as people.

I am against policies requiring pronouns. Mandating behavior like that goes into authoritarianism which I, as a principle, am strongly against.

Reasonable people are welcome to disagree about this interpretation and principle. I am open to hearing civil pushback. Any uncivil pushback will be disregarded.

It goes deeper than that. A lot of people have a huge psychological barrier that comes up when they feel they are being told what to do by society.

WTF are you talking about.

This is basically meeting someone who introduces them as Joseph, and you insisted on calling them John.

It's not "society" forcing something on you. It's literally just doing something that someone kindly asked you to do.

Do you identify as male, female, or somewhere on the gender spectrum? Congratulations, you have pronouns. You always have, too.

Why do I need to announce my preferred pronouns when introducing myself, when for 99.5% of the population, our pronouns are the same as they ever were?
