Reality star, Jim Bob Duggar, the embattled TLC 19 Kids and Counting star has announced his candidacy for Arkansas State Senate despite his SON, Joshua being arrested on federal charges for CHILD PORN!!

He previously served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002 and said "I'm running for State Senate because these are unprecedented times in our nation. The massive family includes 20 children and 22 grandchildren but the news of the family have been for the wrong reasons after itw as cancelled in 2015 when allegations of 33 y/o Joshua sexually assaulting 5 young girls as teens, 4 of them his SISTERS as well as charged with child porn found on his devices of which he pleads not guilty..

He was placed on the sex offender registry for molesing his sisters over the years as Jill and Jessa spoke out as the victim sof the case but said they FORGAVE him for molesting him.

Would you trust a trailer trash family like this running the country?

I base my vote off what I believe a person I'm going to elect is going to do in office...and that's it. The actions of those to them don't much matter in that context unless the candidate is joining in with it somehow. In this case I don't see much of a link (how involved can a dad be with 20-whatever kids) but then again I don't follow crap like this either.

Hell no would I vote for the guy, though.

In general, I don't think being the parent of a pedophile or any other criminal should influence somebody's suitability for politics. In this particular case, though, both parents were fully aware of their son's sexual abuse of their daughters and actively covered it up for the sake of keeping the show going. I'm more willing to forgive the pedophile than I am the people who kept his crimes under wraps. Pedophilia is a mental illness. The harm it causes is inexcusable and should not be tolerated, but it is at least possible to sympathize with pedophiles because their behaviour is a compulsion. Covering up the pedophilia of an associate for personal gain, however, is a lucid decision. That's just straight up corrupt and evil, and while that's certainly not unusual in politics, that's no reason to make it worse by voting in this dickbag.

....yeah some would say mental illness doesn't diminish capacity, and that crimes in action committed are generally worse than the crime of assisting to cover them up.

I think they're both pretty awful

I generally have the attitude that criminal behaviour caused by mental illness can be solved by treating the illness (if not now, then in some hypothetical future when effective treatments have been developed), so while you can certainly still blame the person for it, you can potentially solve the problem. Criminal behaviour caused by just being plain evil, however, is intractably associated with the person.

I'd also say that the parents' decision to cover up his crimes arguably caused more harm than he did. Had they dealt with the situation appropriately as soon as they became aware of it, years of abuse would have been prevented, so they should bear the responsibility for that decision. Yes, he himself was still responsible for each subsequent crime, and you can similarly say that they wouldn't have happened if he hadn't committed them, but the parents had the power to stop him and chose not to.

That also may very well have caused more psychological damage to the victims than they would have suffered otherwise. Being raped by your brother is pretty upsetting to begin with, but being raped by your brother and then having your parents tell you in no uncertain terms that they care more about making sure the family looks good for TV than about preventing your brother from raping you is really going to mess you up.
