League of Legends used to be fun. It wasn't quite so much that everybody got too good, but Riot changed and/or removed every item I liked using, so my play style got ruined.

Hearthstone, too. In the early, wild west days, it was great. Then the mass epidemic of net decking started.

Splatoon is a good example of a game I enjoy playing for the objective until it gets too hard. Then I just play for goofs.

I'd say Mario Kart is an example where it can become frustrating to play in a lobby full of those who made MK their life. Chess.

The infamous "cool shit threshold." Most of us see it for a brief flash, a rapid and uncontrolled burn that consumes the entire wealth of our vast potential in order to score a single goal.

Then, it winks out, like a star in space, never to light again.

But we remember the taste.

If you are playing a multiplayer game and are hoping to clear difficult content you play the meta or stop wasting everyone's time.

Go do your special Homebrewer build in Skyrim

The fighting game genre. The first months of a new fighter are magical, but after that the only people online are far too good for your average player and single player modes in fighters are almost always underwhelming.

Sure. But it makes games feel like a joyless, boring job where max efficiency is all that matters.

All these zones in classic wow feel like like fluff when the meta way to level is to grind 5 mage dungeon groups or pay a mage to solo dungeons for yuo instead of exploriong and questing

Starcraft.

in college we played this on the LAN all the time. I was pretty good, I could take on 3 players at once.

around 2005/6 I decided to play some battle net. Did 10 matches I got crushed every single time.

Not really getting too good, but Jump Ultimate Stars was great until hackers made it so you could have infinite SP and spam supers. That in a game with Dio and his fucking time stop was broken. Although I have beaten hackers even when they had that hell of a huge advantage lol.

Other than that, I love when fighting games evolve, since it allows me to learn and get better. I dont think Ive ever played a fighter where people got too good lol. I just improved with the community since my friends are among the best in Hawaii at fighting games.

Although I think a lot of people are greatly underestimating how often new players enter good fighting games. I played UMvC3 for years, and even then there was never a shortage of button mashing scrubs to troll. It was fun when I found someone around my level to give me a good challenge, but it was also fun to do combos with 4 consecutive Bionic Lancers, or 7 consecutive hard tags.

This. I could always hold my own against my siblings and friends, but once I started playing online, I quickly learned I wasn't good at fighting games at all.

It's a harsh dichotomy, being a fighting game enthusiast. I want to get people playing, but also, if I see you online, I will crush you with the full force of a lifetime of experience. It's the only respectful thing to do.

Kind of the opposite for me, here:

I used to love playing Galactic Assault in Battlefront II, but then I got too into Co-op (you and three other real people vs. bots) and now playing against real people is too difficult lol. I totally nerfed myself.

I was pretty decent in Rocket League from 2015-2018. Nothing crazy but I won like 60-70% of my matches no problem

Started playing again a few months ago and every fucking lobby I join, even casual, has people flip resetting and dribbling all over the place. And then being unable to leave **casual** matches makes it even worse because as soon as you go down 2 goals regardless of how much time is left, your teammates what to forfeit and if you don't also vote to forfeit the toxicity starts

Pretty much any online anime game

I'm good/decent at fighting games, but for some reason that just doesn't match to anime games like storm and the mha ones

I'll do good for like a month and then it's almost impossible to win after that. No clue why.

I remember the days of Dota and LOL even before every single thing was laid out online. The days when you had to experiment for yourself and talk things through with other good players.

I felt that I earned my way to the top in those days.

For me, it was more the fact that the game went from "Use cartoon guns to be the last one of 100 to survive" to all the bullshit teleporting and suction guns and rapid build BS it is now that turned me off.
