There is a real lack of context here. How long have those men been employed as critics, how many apply that are men, women, colored etc?

.And then you'll have men white men booted out if their jobs for no reason to be replaced by people of color for representation, and he successfully files a suit for 10 million.

White men don't hate diversity. In fact, these same critics she criticized have given great reviews to TONS of different diverse films. A Wrinkle in Time just wasn't one of those.

These guys are film critics. They tend to lean pretty hard to the left. They're generally gonna be pro diversity.

Also, films are made for everyone. Telling a white guy that a film wasn't made for him is just wrong

The best thing you could say about Brie Larson's words is that they were well intentioned, but delivered in a very clumsy way.

Wow, never heard of this person but what she's saying is inherently racist. Grouping all "women of color" is ignoring that that extremely broad group is diverse and that being a person of color presumes you'll like anything that features a person of color and whatever culture goes along with it?

I mean, is there a huge demographic of black women that love Indian movies in Hindi?
Are there swaths of Chinese immigrant women dying to see Halle Berry's new MMA movie?
Are Syrian and Afghan women fighting tooth and nail to ensure Cuties stays up on Netflix?
Is Undone the most popular Prime show among Hispanic women?

Personally, I wouldn't take a whole lot of pride in grouping all poc and woc together as if they are one monolithic thing. They are people with different interests, different values, different priorities in life, different personalities and sense of humor.

There's some valuable message in saying more diversity is important, but not like this. Not like this.

PS
If you haven't watched Undone on Prime, fucking do it. Great show.

I looked up Cuties and I see lots of women's names.

how many of you say "cringe" when a teen character speaks like a gen Z and call something bad for that

ok

now how many of you loved the 87 ninja turtles

now tell me the difference in dialog

there is none

its not hard to grasp people whine about things that dont fit how they grew up

a strait white man is not going to relate to a movie talking about racism

now thats not to say a strait white man cant enjoy said movie

but if that man is a reviewer and uses his life experience to down play the movies message

well there is a problem

Now that's just dumb.
Let's look at current popular media.
How many people can relate to being a Billionaire superhero?
How many can relate to being a powerful (almost godlike) space alien?
How many people can relate to being hit by gamma rays and can grow massively strong?
How many people can relate to being an Spy?

That's just the dumbest argument you could make.

If you make a good film, you get good reviews (overwhelmingly), you may still see some that just simply didn't connect with the film but the race of the characters or critics doesn't matter at all.

With what she said, she literally tried to exclude not just white people, but white men.
So not only were here comments racist, they were sexist. And her movie sucked ass.

Are these white men by and large giving diverse films bad reviews?

No they are not and Brie Larson used the one example of a diverse film that was reviewed poorly.

This kind of hinges on the idea that these white men are giving these films bad reviews when they are not.

Also, the academy did become significantly more diverse in life of the #oscarssowhite stuff years ago.

You used Green Book winning as an example of the Oscars supporting a racist movie yet that was bookended with Moonlight and Parasite both winning Oscars for BP. Weird how you ignore those two and cherry pick Green Book which tbf yeah that movie sucked.

Uh what?

Brie Larson is making some weird implication that old white dudes won't promote diverse films or that they'll get better reviews with more diverse film critics.

Keep in mind that anyone with an interest in film is almost always left leaning and supports these things. There are countless diverse films that have received great reviews and won awards.

This idea that the demographics of critics is somehow a hindrance to diverse films is not at all based in reality.

She kept bringing up A Wrinkle in Time as if that movie should have been reviewed much better and that film just wasn't very good. Not every diverse film is good. In fact, that film is one of the biggest exceptions to diverse films generally receiving favorable reviews.

There's a reason why so black many people who otherwise had no interest in comic book movies went and saw Black Panther. It wasn't because they identified with being a Superhero. It's because representation matters

Then there's the even deeper fundamental error that if people in some position of influence or power are abusing it in some prejudicial or biased way, that making that group more diverse will fix it. Police departments don't seem to have any trouble finding black cops to enforce racist laws.

Apples to oranges. Police operate under a specific set of procedures and laws that are inherently racist and anybody who doesn't operate under that framework is either removed from the system or shunned within it.

Film criticism by nature is more about personal experience and tastes.

I see a lot of people ITT making arguments for why what she said was problematic and the response is typically

"Lol incels"

Women of color can give their opinions on films and they don't have to be critics to do it. Being a film critic also isn't this super important thing so quite frankly who cares what the racial identity of them are.

A bigger question is "why do people care what critics think?"
