History and culture is overrated. It's something you take back to your friends to bring up in conversations until they just get annoyed by you lol. Neh, but I personally dunno how Id absorb any of that if I don't speak the language. Id learn more from someone explaining it to me in English while here. I'm too dumb/nonchalant to learn a language at this point.

I'd rather not go to China since I work for the US government and would rather not be detained or something in a misguided attempt to get secrets from me, lol. That's going by The State Department's travel advisory, and China has all my info from the OPM data breach a few years ago.

Yeah, that's not too likely probably, but I'm not too much of a traveler anyway so I don't feel the need to go there or really anywhere else. Actually have a coworker that went and adopted two girls from China with his wife, and they were fine. That was long before the Xi regime, though.

Beijing to me was just like any other big city I've visisted honestly, general indifference if not annoyance at tourists and outsiders. Very different vibe when you go out in the country, people are a lot more welcoming and curious.

I believe you. But some can achieve that without going to. Maybe not all the subtleties, but we have enough insight through the internet now that we can all see that North America is just a bubble we live in. I guessIm just splitting hairs tho. I believe you got perspective 99% would only get from actually living there too, but I don't think the big things are out of range for someone who didn't go there. You can use empathy and understanding to listen to someone who came from there and get a familiar insight. Again, not all the subtleties, but they'll cover the major differences.

Can you share one the main things you learned?

Mostly psychology and why people do what they do. That's my main interest. We talk about our anxieties and theorize on why people feel them. We also do talk about how others in different countries have different experiences and compare them to how people live here.

"Boring" is subjective btw. If 2 people liked Pokemon, they wouldn't be boring to each other and they'd enjoy the conversation. The same way I enjoy a conversation about the stuff I just mentioned because it's my personal interest.

I saw the value of community, the value of nature, the value of working with the land, the value of lack of attachment to objects, the value of slowing down and how easily achieved all of these things are

I don't think these are things you can understand by reading about them. I didn't understand til I came back to the US

I've preached all that stuff since I got here >_>. The main problem is the way America is set up, so many people don't have the time to slow down and realize all that. Because if they're not working like a dog, they're struggling.

But anyone here who pays attention to me more, like Catboy, could confirm I consistently rant and preach about everything you mentioned.

I'm glad you found all that stuff the way you did and again, I'm not gonna deny you probably did pick up some subtleties from living there. But all the stuff you mentioned is learnable from afar if you don't give in to the mentality of those you live around. You're now an example of how you could learn it from someone in North America. You're not a mental slave to only being able to comprehend the life of those in your country. That's ridiculous.
