i see a lot of people confused on how they work and why people are using blades instead of guns / lasers

Didn't the trainer guy spell it out? They don't let high velocity objects through. But really it seems kinda self evident either way. Even in the big battle scene the aerial bombs delay their descent to pass through the shields of the industrial equipment.

In the books if a high velocity object touches a shield it generates a nuclear explosion, or something like that.

I was indeed confused about the lack of guns when I watched it.

But then I started reading the book and it makes sense.
