JRPGs are made in Japan (for example Dark Souls), whereas WRPGs are made in the west (like South Park: The Stick of Truth)

Oh man, you can tell this was a decade ago. Back then WRPGs were definitely on the top while JRPGs were in a rut. Nowadays they seem to have swapped places with many WRPG franchises stagnating while JRPGs are having a renaissance.

I'm not sure, I really haven't played much JRPGs since the ps2 era. I've been meaning to get around to some of the big ones, but i never do. Kind of a bummer and I should fix that.

I don't really follow JRPGs myself but you can tell that niche franchises like Persona, Fire Emblem, Nier, and Yakuza have suddenly become a lot more mainstream. Stuff like Dragon Quest and Atelier have suddenly started selling a lot more in the west too. Meanwhile, the latest content from Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect have had polarizing reception with Bethesda, CDPR, Bioware getting a lot of ire for their latest stuff.

I feel like early JRPGs were more concerned with adapting the combat/class systems of TTRPGS into something simple and streamlined, that could work within the limitations of the hardware at the time while still being fun to play.

WRPGs tended to be pretty ambitious in adapting as many TTRPG mechanics as possible.

What this usually results in is JRPGs being a rollercoaster. You can build your characters, mess with skill trees, etc, but you're mostly just enjoying the ride that was laid out for you.

WRPGs are like a haunted house, where you're largely free to wander and explore the game at your own pace, but will still hit the major set-pieces by the end.

For me, one of the biggest distinctions is that WRPGs tend to give you more say in shaping both your character and the story, while JRPGs tend to have set characters and plots that you're just following along with. The other lines between the two (turn-based vs real time, open exploration vs linear) have become more blurred over time.

I don't know why people are saying JRPGs are made in Japan and WRPGs are made in the West. Western studios have made JRPGs and Japanese studios have made WRPGs. They refer to a very specific style that originated in those regions

Dark Souls is not a JRPG and CrossCode isn't a WRPG.
The fuck you talking about. JRPG literally stands for Japanese Role Playing Game. It's literally the most self explanatory thing out there.

JRPG is a genre invented in Japan it is not "what country made it"

How do you figure? Just because it has action gameplay and not turn-based doesn't make it any less of a JRPG

Because of:
  1. Complexity in character creation and stat management.
  2. Story delivery is up to the player to discover.
  3. Free expressive interaction and environment.
These are the hallmarks of WRPGs.
