Ive played fighting games before like Street Fighter II Turbo and Soul Calibur II. But I wouldnt say I know what Im doing. And Ive wanted to get into these kind of games before but they seem kind of intimidating? Maybe Im just overthinking this.

Any game should be a good starting point. If not then it's a bad game.

Strive was intentionally designed to try and be beginner friendly above all else, to the point where some veteran players are upset that it's been simplified too much to the point the game is less interesting.

So if low barrier of entry for a fighter is your main goal, it's probably what you're looking for.

They did this because frankly, fighting games are niche compared to many other genres and they were hoping to bring in a new audience and increase sales for the franchise.

Aside from the original fighting brands like Street fighter and MK which everybody in the west recognizes, most fighting games that don't sport big IPs like DC or Marvel struggle to sell in high numbers.

Funnily enough, while Strive seemed to have the goal of being simple, Dragon Ball FighterZ was patched to be more crazy.

Another thing to note though is Strive uses better netcode then most other Japanese fighters (the first time the developer is using it for a new game), since I assume you'll be mostly playing online.

Guilty Gear's story is mostly nonsense, and the "story" mode for Strive is essentially just a movie with no interaction, so if you're looking for decent single player mode like the Injustice games have, know it doesn't have that.

yeah it is, older GG games are kind of notorious but strive is a lot more accessible

the new melty blood is also good for beginners

i wouldnt say any of those are really an accessible good first game (not totally sure about power rangers, though)

i consider myself "approximately average at tournaments" skill level and i've NEVER been able to get good at kof games, the combos feel way too hard and the neutral feels overly complex with the array of jump-in options you have available

i still think sf4 is one of the best beginner games because of the lack of combos but its pretty dead now cuz of 5...

Compared to other GG games, this one was definitely developed with accessibility in mind, although I wouldn't say it's the most beginner friendly fighter game. You will still need to learn a lot on fighting game concepts such as neutral, meaty, blockstring etc.

Another thing, the game uses a ranking system that places you on a floor with players of similar level. I think most players are around floor 6+, so if you plan to stick around and play, it's worth developing your skills to that level so you have actual opponents to play against.

The lobby system is ass tho

Well when I say low barrier to entry, I don't mean easily being able to get good enough to play people in tournaments, ha

I only mean like... KoF just makes sense. The movements feel like they are what you should be doing for the moves youre seeing on screen (95% of the time). Compare that to say something like mortal kombat or killer instinct or marvel where you're basically having to look up and memorize combos and combo videos just to do anything. Even with a basic understand of 3 KoF characters and playing with them a bit over time, you stand a good chance at being able to at least have a fun match against someone and not just a one-sided STOMP of all your characters

It should be noted that if you're a Dragon Ball fan you might as well get Dragon Ball FighterZ for that reason. Dragon Ball FighterZ actually has a pretty good single player story for a fighter if that's a concern for you.

Developer support for the game probably just ended though.
