First one that comes to mind is Time Stalkers. Bombed hard with critics, but man did I love that game. I remember playing it for the first time at a relative's house then deciding I needed to have it. I remember one day my mom let me stay home from school (I'm not even sure why, I didn't ask for it haha) and I spent the whole day playing it.

I never played the original, but I played the 2nd game. I remember losing a fight to the guy on the cover whose name I can't remember for some reason and rage quitting and throwing the disc at the wall not even with that much force (really tiny room. I could stand in the middle of the room and touch all 4 walls with a broom) but it landed underneath the TV and got scratched up and wouldn't work anymore. I was even more annoyed at myself. Ended up buying the GameCube port but didn't play much of it.

Man, I'd LOVE remake of Time Stalkers. Or a rerelease lol. But I had the first Tomba growing up! It was soooo much fun. Could not wait to get home from school to play it. I remember one day after school being super excited to start it up again, but the disc randomly wouldn't work anymore.

Outside of nostalgia YouTubers, I don't ever hear anyone talk about Disruptor, even though it was Insomniac's first game.
That game was fun (and frustrating).

Rather than try and find the most obscure thing I can think of, probably from an older console, I'm going to use this as an opportunity to plug Valdis Story which is an incredible and underappreciated metroidvania with a ton of replay value on steam.

That actually looks interesting enough that I just put it on my watch list. I especially like that it's not pixel graphics since I feel so many indie games use pixel graphics and I'm just not a fan of it. I hated 30xx adopted it when 20xx looked so much better to me.

Magicians quest/tongari boushi

Life sim where you play a student attending magic school. Honestly has everything animal crossing does, plus learning magic @ school, and weekly mystery plots to solve. I found the art style super charming, your classmates can be anthro food/objects as well as animals. Theres been 4 games in JP, but only the first DS game was localized

Betrayal in Antara.
A RPG made by Sierra in 1997, after Betrayal at Krondor turned out to be a success, but they had sold that franchise by then, so instead of making a sequel they made this.

It's the graphics that scared everyone away, but literally everything else about the game is perfect: gameplay, story, world-building, music, and tons of additional areas and side-quests to explore.

A few years ago it was finally re-released on Steam and GOG, in part thanks to the fame of Betrayal at Krondor.

Anyway, my favorite obscure game is called Millennium: Return to Earth.

It's a strategy game with a splash of action about terraforming Earth because climate change fucked up earth so hard it became too hostile to live on. Your operations are from the moon.

Robot Alchemic Drive. I never see anyone talking about it. It was a ps2 game where you control a giant robot and make it fight invading robots from space in a city landscape. With destructible buildings. It was really fun. I wish it got a sequel.

galaxy online 2 (though i'm pretty sure it's dead now.)

one of those stupid build your base and never die games on it's surface, but with an incredible army building mechanic (spaceships, in this case), and a healthy PvE game to use them in. had a gacha component, too, where they clearly didn't understand the value of a dollar, but if you were good you could in game trade the PvE drops for all of it (a small purchase was required, but everything past that was optional/get out of stuck/whalemode)

Space: Glory Through Conquest is an even better fleet combat game, though the shipbuilder itself wasn't quite as deep. MMO, with instanced games. when it was popular, each game started with a couple hundred players. i think they were down to 50 per instance towards the end. but basically you start with a couple locations, which you develop for resources, to build ships to claim more locations. loop until most of the galaxy is claimed, then (or while) attack your neighbors to grow your territory until only a few players remain. you can keep playing until you're out of territory, but once you're out, you have to jump into the next instance. each one could last a few months.

i really want to replicate this one, but condense the experience down to a few hours.

Aground, 2d MineCraft-ish with even simpler Starbound graphics. Play as a survivor who crash lands on an island on a magical alien planet, gather resources across the land to reach the stars again with the power of technology and magic. Also for some reason you can become a dog. I'm not into it but hey.
