I'll also accept abstract artillery like ICBMs, Trebuchets, and the Javelin Missile System

But I want to EXCLUDE strategy games since artillery is usually just a standard unit type... but you don't have to exclude it, I mean, the Terran Siege Tank has a ton of WUMPUS to it

I'm a fan of Factorio's artillery, though that would probably qualify as a strategy game. Satisfying sounds, actual infrastructure needs to operate it, CANNONS ON TRAINS, really well-established as an anti-structure weaponry (fire rate and projectile speed are too slow to hit anything that's moving, crippling minimum range means it can't fight back against anything attacking it)... It's just fun to use.

Not sure if it's the best. But the mandrake in crossout is pretty nice.

Artillery were pretty busted in vanilla Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun.

Mengsk's artillery (Earthsplitter Ordinance) in starcraft 2's coop mode is cathartic, especially when you take the prestige to upgrade them. The building by itself is good, but you can garrison troops inside to increase their firing speed by a ton, plus you can call down contaminated strikes to aoe fear+poison- which scales with the number of earthsplitters you have built. They're high damage with low accuracy but if you build enough of them accuracy ceases to matter. They also give vision when they hit for a few seconds.

Plus they feel like actual artillery, unlike siege tanks, which are just ranged splash machines with pinpoint precision. Earthsplitters reach across about a third of the map, so building them in central locations and defending them can win you the match easily. Fastest way to farm experience in the game is just rush earthsplitters and put them in a certain location on a certain map thats just out of the way enough to not get attacked by enemy attack waves but can still reach every objective.

siege tanks are probably the winner, and what makes me think I remember things like that.

in Earth 2150 IIRC there were grenade launcher/lobber type weapons you could put on mechs, and they would lob grenades up in an arc that would come down and land on things. I remember them being super effective against the "russian" tanks. but... definitely not the best.

I think a couple of the vehicles in Body Harvest fired like a mortar, but I can't quite remember for sure. looking it up to confirm, yes, the Howitzer would fire a large arcing projectile that would explode in a huge radius when it landed. (this is the best example I can think of that isn't a strategy game).

I think other memories of that kind of attack are probably mostly just grenade launchers, like in TF2

ok that recalls some that I didn't think of yet: Worms! Worms games are all about arcing ballistic projectiles.

Armed and Dangerous. It has some cool weapons. My favorite is the Land Shark gun that shoots out sharks that basically swim through the ground then pop up and eat the enemies.
