Some moments are more impactful if you've played the Greek games but you don't really need to if you wanna just read a synopsis instead.

Not very important. There are a few moments where you might not understand exactly why it's emotional, but pretty much all you need to know is Kratos hates gods and will kill them in a heartbeat

I hate to say it but I kind of agree?

I've tried many times to get into this game and I just can't do it. The farthest I've got is Alfheim.It's completely boring. It's a technological tour de force achievement for sure, but the story is a complete slog, made worse by the fact that you have to play as Kratos -taciturn toughguy turned bad dad - and put up with the most annoying kid sidekick I can remember. Everyone says that this game has really profound moments about fatherhood/grief/reconciling the past but I have yet to get there and probably never will. Playing it is like watching a bad Terrance Malick movie: the most gorgeous film you've ever seen yet being completely disinterested the whole time.

I thought the layered exploration at the lake was actually done really well, at the very least.

Kratos's movement and the field of view hurt in that regard.

I really can't get excited over those new ports
It's a step in the right direction but....as long as the previous games in the series are still Sony exclusive, I won't play this :/

GoW '18 stands alone well enough that I don't think it's a problem.

Porting UC4 and Lost Legacy without the first three games is pretty baffling, though.
