f*** Biden

President Joe Biden met with a range of lawmakers on Tuesday, including moderate Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Shitenema, to hash out what will realistically end up in the expansive reconciliation bill Democrats are seeking to pass, and as CNN reported, Biden informed House progressives that free community college will not end up in the final bill.
California Rep. Ro Khanna said in a CNN interview that Biden still planned to provide "community college scholarships" in the bill, and added that the president plans to keep the universal pre-K proposal.

seems clear who to blame. biden was negotiating to keep as much as he could

I didn't even know it was on the table

It was part of the 3.5 trillion house package. Biden is in the process of cutting it down because that will never pass the Senate and he wants the Senate's bipartisan 1 trillion dollar infrastructure package to pass the house so that he can claim a victory in getting both parties to work together on legislation. So what's happening in reality is that rather than passing three to four and a half trillion dollars in spending the house bill will probably get cut down to something like 2 trillion and then both bills will pass. So the country is still going to get something like 2-3 trillion in social spending, it's just not going to get the insane amount that was originally proposed. But since everyone on ce defaults to absolute despair, going to keep seeing users act like the end result is Biden doing literally nothing and Republicans getting everything they want somehow.

If libraries were proposed today, it would be a gigantic trillion dollar omnibus bill full of superfluous and unrelated riders, shittons of carveouts and exemptions, lots and lots of special interest pandering, and just end up generally awful at being libraries.

i mean, the victory would clearly be getting the spending, not that republicans supported the senate bill

s0nicfan posted...
But since everyone on ce defaults to absolute despair

idk, the despair seems to stem from the two "moderate" democrats basically indicating they are not actually willing to pass the house bill under any circumstances, while demanding that their infrastructure bill be passed immediately in order to destroy any negotiating power for progressives on the house bill

after seeing the GOP use their identical situation to destroy the legacy of the previous dem admin and then pass their own on top, it's pretty disheartening to see so little unity among democrats

but democrats have never really had unity

Dropping something like this isnt quite the slide into a conservative hellscape CE is treating it as. Compromise and negotiation sometimes means giving something up.

A chimpanzee wearing a suit is a better, more sensible candidate than Trump. Unfortunately his joke of a presidency set the bar so, so, SO low that Biden seemed like a genuine glimmer of hope for a lot of Americans.

What you're getting is enough votes to pass 3 trillion dollars in spending. That's what you're getting in exchange for not getting four and a half trillion dollars in spending which is never going to pass in the first place.

The previous largest package in history is 1.9 trillion which was the covid relief bill. The biggest one before that was during the Obama era at 900 billion.

Do people just not understand how insanely large the original package is? "My social spending package that is twice as big as anything that has ever come before it, which itself was twice as big as the third largest package, is being cut down. Boohoo it's like I'm not getting anything."

$850 for a normal class. Less or more depending on how many credits. Not including books.

Then about $150 for actual tuition lol.

Mr Hangman posted...
There are two ways to look at college:
1. The way we pretend it is, as a source of education and training
2. The way it actually is, which is a filter for separating more and less qualified people
Almost anything you could possibly learn in college could be done much more easily and cheaply any number of different ways. If that was really the point, as a proof of someone's education, you'd just be able to take a test any time you want and prove you know the material.

In its actual function as a human filter, "free" (i.e. taxpayer funded) college seems like a way to help disadvantaged people get ahead, but it's not. It's just shoveling money into a credential treadmill. There will just be another hurdle after, and another and another until they have something you can't do and they can separate whoever can do it. Fixing this requires a cultural change where we stop demanding credentials of job applicants that aren't needed to perform the job. But that may never happen given that jobs will continue to disappear due to automation.

Put another way, if you just gave 18 year-olds this money, would they actually choose to spend it on college? Some would, sure, but how many?

tl;dr free college plans are a waste of money proposed by people who drank the kool-aid on boomer-era university propaganda

This whole post comes off hilarious when the source is someone who gets his "learning" from youtube.
