a high quality piece of furniture that you'll use daily and will last you 20+ years is absolutely worth $2,000. i understand if you aren't at a point in your life where you're ready to make such a purchase, if so consider a cheaper placeholder.

I guess ask if she really wants thinks you guys are in a financial place to make that kind of purchase.

Additionally, if you don't have a house yet or somewhere you'll be living at long term, but are planning on moving soon, is there any risk in getting the couch and then not liking how it fits in a new place you move to.

I bought a $2k couch about 3 years ago and it was one of the best things I ever bought. Assuming it's high quality and comfortable to you I say go for it.

i guess we are. we have some money, outside of our 3 month emergency fund, that can buy the couch. but i was hoping to use that for other things, like toward a down payment on a house we want to buy in a couple years

but i mean, with proper budgeting, it only really sets us back a month or two in terms of saving.

it better be a bomb ass couch.

fwiw, my roommate bought a $4,000 couch like 5 years ago and he's had like two dozen people tell him it's the most comfortable couch they ever sat on. it's pretty fucking nice. it's also quite large, it's basically a couch + loveseat + corner (one of those L-shaped ones)

Honestly I feel you man.

we dropped like 3k on our first couch&loveseat combo. Our animals destroyed both within a year.

Ill never buy brand new furniture again tbh

i think im just cautious because after buying shitty mattresses on amazon for 200 bucks, we bought a "good' 1000 dollar mattress at MattressFirm

AND WE HATE IT

1000 is cheap for a mattress

2000 is cheap for a couch

You gotta go up in price bracket for quality

my entire living room (and perhaps even the dining room) set cost $3k

but i guess if you're going for longevity, $2k is a reasonable price

price doesnt always guarantee "quality" and even if something is "quality" doesn't mean you'll like it. before he bought that couch he shopped around for a couple of weeks. going to various furniture stores and testing them all out.

you mentioned wanting to move soon, and that other poster raises a good point that just because a couch works in your current place doesn't guarantee it'll work in the next place. consider getting the house first and then filling it with furniture.

Got a $2k couch this summer and honestly it was pretty cheap compared to a lot of the couches that place had. Still a super comfy couch I'm happy with the purchase.

Most places do 0% financing too so you can pay it off over a year or whatever.

I don't trust when people say this anymore. People say they want it long term, but then they'll just get bored of it and want something new in a few years

Check the salvation army store for a sweet deal. That's where I got my Hugo Boss jacket for 10 dollar. Might want to fumigate it first doe.

I don't mind it so much for furniture. But I would at least take a look at the couch and see if you like it just as much as your wife does.

I could never justify spending more than a few hundred on a piece of furniture, and it'd have to be pretty good for me to even spend that.

Oh, the $150 one will only last four or five years? No problem, I'll get another one, and still only spend $600 instead of $2000 over the next 20 years.

Now if there was a $600 one that would last as long as (or longer than) four $150 ones, that might justify it.
