I know 5 kind of kneecapped the main series, but I didn't realize there have been like a dozen other releases since then.

What is genuinely worth the time investment?

5 is good fun imo, but it's not even remotely trying to be horror. It's a pretty solid action game, especially co-op.

6 trash, avoid.

7 was a great return to form, they stripped things back to basic survival horror and ditched all the ridiculous ongoing plot stuff (kinda). It does tail off but I'd recommend it.

2 Remake is probably my favourite game in the whole series, it's terrific. Haven't played 3make or 8age.

Revelations 1+2 are somewhere in the middle here, they're fun experiences if you like RE but not top tier. I think Rev 1>2 but I think most people go the other way.

I think I'm in the minority that prefers 6 over 5, but neither are super great. More fun if you have a co-op friend to play with

7 and 8 are both excellent and must play games

Revelations series are spinoffs with more loot based and level up mechanics to them but they're fun

2 remake is a top tier RE game

3 remake is a bit disappointing in comparison but it's fine

My essentials list would be this, in this order:

Resident Evil 2 Remake
RE7
RE8
Resident Evil 3 Remake
Resident Evil 5
Revelations 1 + 2

Resident Evil 2 Remake isn't just one of the best REs ever made, it stands as a must-play essential of gaming in general. Coming off of RE4, you'll find right at home with its OTS perspective and similar gunplay. The game is as challenging as you want it to be, with perfectly balanced difficulty settings. If you want a real survival horror experience, hardcore is the way to go but otherwise normal offers a good balance. RE2 is one of the shining examples in the genre and I constantly suggest it as a gateway game.

RE7 & RE8 should come next. The transition to first-person means things are up close and personal and thus more frightening. RE7 is far closer to a traditional survival horror game, with puzzle exploration and heavy resource management. RE8 is similar to RE4 and has more emphasis on action. It's also more linear with the caveat being there's a lot of places to go off the beaten path and hunt for treasure if you desire.

RE3 remake is a thrill-ride and will not be the game you're expecting after RE2 remake. People rag on this game all the time, for some good reasons, but in my opinion it's a fantastic distillation of action-horror in a game that won't take you very long to beat. It never lets up for a second, has memorable characters, and tons of replayability.

Resident Evil 5 is fantastic as a co-op game, as you may have heard. It's more of what RE4 offered, with a partner and interesting dynamic and interplay that comes with an extra gun. If you're into RE lore at all, I think it tells a great story as well.

Revelations games were the stopgaps between RE4 and RE7, the best and worst of both worlds: action and horror. They never quite commit to either one which makes them feel watered down at times, but the pacing and structure of them means things never feel too stale. I actually quite love Revelations 2, a lot due to the character work (Claire & Barry hell yeah), but there's also great horror moments in it too.

All of them are worth playing tf?

Remake 2
----
RE5
RE Revelations
RE Revelations 2
----
Remake 3
RE6

Remake 2 is the one you have to play if you're just gonna do one. The middle are just great games. The bottom two are still good if you've had fun with the rest, but the most skippable. 7 probably goes up at the top and 8 somewhere in the middle based on reputation.

If you can, play RE5 Gold on PS3 with Move controllers.

Skip 6. It's bascially unplayable, in the sense that the controls and interface are a bigger threat than the monsters. Sure, a zombie might grab you, but it won't screw with the camera so that a QTE-filled sequence where all you're trying to do is run in a goddamn straight line is nigh impossible.

What about those Chronicles rail shooters?

They're fun with someone else. They're a bit of a nightmare to play alone, they are super challenging and frustating at times. I like them for the extra lore context they provide in the scenarios. Especially Darkside, the production quality of the cutscenes in that game is actually pretty crazy for a rail shooter. Darkside's camera is noticeably terrible however, non-stop shaking with no stabilization. Such a bizarre design choice.

6 was miles better than 5. But to be honest 5 is the worst of the mainline games so it's not beating much imo.

Not at all! I actually probably like RE6 more than most, but I think it's FAR from being an essential Resident Evil. For one, If you're not 100% invested in the overarching RE story than you will hate the campaigns' storylines for sure. Then, there's the differences in tone between each campaign that will hit or miss depending on what you're into. Boss fights drag on far too long than necessary and vehicle sections are liable to cause massive headaches.

If I had a suggestion, I would try jumping into the games' Mercs mode and testing out the combat mechanics. You can do some truly insane shit, with quickshooting, sliding and dodging, a vast suite of melee moves. It's actually pretty fun once you get into it.

I'd agree with Snake on RE6. Only play it if you're really into the RE storyline, even though it's likely most of the plot points raised will never be mentioned again. Also if you can find a friend to play it with and both go in with the right mindset, it's much more bearable.

REmake2 is it

I don't regret playing through most of the others (5, 7, 8, REmake3), but 2 is in a whole other ballpark of quality. Perfect time of the year to be playing it as well - one of the scariest games in the series.

RE2R and 7 are mandatory for sure.

Village is awesome but is very much a mixed bag of things that won't all appeal to everyone. RE3R is great but super short and less representative of RE3 than RE2R was for its original, which disappointed a lot of folks.

You can customize your character in some really silly ways, and on the Giant Bomb quick look they put face paint on Barry Burton to make him look like a Juggalo

The game is awful BTW
