If the game is fun, people will come to play. It doesn't hurt to have iconic characters either since that gives the game built-in branding. They were never going to be able to compete with Nintendo in terms of flashiness and style compared to Ultimate. Ultimate just has too big of a budget compared to NASB for them to be able to do that. Even if the devs focused entirely on VA/graphics/etc., people would have still called it lazy and cheap-looking. The difference is, people would also call it boring.
