I'm interested in it and a buddy of mine pre-ordered it, so I'll be trying it out tomorrow.

Iunno, the fighters and stages look cool, but the animation is kinda janky and the lack of licensed music/voices is pretty baffling.

I'm sure I'll still get a kick out of it, but if someone close to me wasn't buying it I'd probably never play it lol.

I was really interested in the idea. I saw a gameplay video of Toph last night and thought the game looked like crap with the animations. Must be very low budget.

For three reasons:
  1. Wavedashing
  2. Rollback netcode
  3. Nostalgia (especially since some feel that Smash has lost its way due to the number of "anime swordsmen" or just "anime" in general being added)
That's it, really.

I'm not against the game as a concept, but it looks very janky and lacks polish, flair, and personality. Definitely won't be a "Smash-killer" anytime soon.

I don't think it's going to be a serious competitor to Smash, but I still think it looks fun with what they've been given.

It comes off as the platform fighter version of Battle for the Grid in terms of cheap production values.

That's the only thing that makes it seem a bit soulless, but mechanically it looks really smooth.

If it ends up popular enough maybe they can negotiate something to add voices because it's such a strange oversight.

Really this, plus we might even have a game that can compete against Smash competitively. Well better than others that tried in the past.

With that said, I wouldn't really label this game as a "shovelware" per say. Yes it has a very small budget with a very short development time, but with how much effort they put into the mechanics of the game. If it really were a shovelware, they would've given it to the people who made Slap City and instead given to another development team that specializes in churning out cheap games.

The animations are stiff and unattractive. Especially the jumping animations. I saw the Toph preview and her jump was terrible to watch. Without voices, music, or appealing animations idk how this game is supposed to capture an audience.

It's mostly salty Melee fans inflating this game.

Not to say this game wouldn't have buyers for all of the nick nostalgia with it. However the game is so low budget it doesn't even call to the nostalgia of the voice actors.

This game meme'ing is definitely where most of the hype is coming from. Memes sort of take a life of their own and the more resistance there is to the meme thr more the meme grows.

This game obviously had a limited budget, and the dev had to make a call what the focus would be on.

In the end, they decided to prioritize nostaliga and the Melee fanbase in order to generate buzz. I think it could have ended up a lot worse.

I'm excited for it.

Yeah, that's a good point. If it works as a proof-of-concept and sells well enough, maybe Nick will throw more money at the developers for a sequel that actually has iconic voices/music/sound effects, plus fluid animations.

I'm sure the nuts and bolts of the design work really well, but the presentation is really shoddy judging from everything I've seen.
