Every time Ive heard anyone talk about art its always about how talented people are. Never about learning and practice. Im assuming you can learn how to draw and practice to be decent but can you just not go past decent without talent or something?

There's an interesting book by an artist called Larry Gluck it's called "The Talent Myth"

He explains exactly why it's all about learning. Look it up

Sounds very interesting actually

I might. I stopped trying to draw in 5th grade, when there was some gifted program looking for students that gave our class a test. We were given a printout from a very shitty copy machine, of a photo of sunflowers behind a fence. We were told to do our best to copy it as well as we could.

I thought I drew a pretty good Charizard, but I couldn't begin to wrap my mind around how to even draw this mess. One girl there made a perfect recreation. She had never drawn before. Gave up then and there.

All artists are trash when they first start. Basically you just continue picking up tricks that allow you to maintain the illusion that you are a good artist.

Even if talent is a real thing, you'll never know if you have it unless you learn to draw and you practice. There are plenty of accomplished artists who've shown off their early drawings and they're clearly much less educated and less practiced. All the talent in the world would be completely useless without any study or practice, but a ton of practice will still get you pretty far even if you don't think you're very talented.

That's a good point. Also, aside from whatever skill is required, if it's something that brings you joy that should be a good enough reason alone to pursue making art.

In drawing there are talented people, yes. They can see something or imagine something and just easily transfer it to paper.

Drawing is still a skill, not a talent. We all start at different starting points but you can learn, adapt, grow and break through

Draw something everyday. Doesn't always have to be grand, doesn't always have to be hard or easy. At least 1 thing a day, every day. Even if you don't want to, draw something.

Make sure you learn proper anatomy of a body too. Start there, learn how the building blocks of a body works and then move on to morphing, stretching and changing anatomy. Having general knowledge of proper anatomy will incredibly come in handy when going for exaggerated body shapes

Yeah this too. If you wanna draw or craft things, just do it and have fun with it. Don't think too much about whether it's "good" except maybe to ask "what could I have done differently?"

i have been drawing all my life and still suck at it, but i also a) dont really put any effort into learning technical stuff like anatomy and the like and b) have mild difficulty with fine motor skill things
id like to get really good at drawing though, i hear people that do furry commissions make mad bank

Go for it. There are a ton of tutorials for different types of things you can draw on youtube or just around the internet. Don't get discouraged when drawings don't turn out how you envisioned them, just have fun learning new tricks and creating.

Similar story for me but I was the one that drew really well but got in shit because the teacher thought I traced it. She gave me a ton of shit and failed my assignment. Never bothered with trying to be creative again.

That's fucked up. Bitter teacher that probably thought "there's no way this KID is better than me when I've been doing this for longer than he's been alive!"

In the immortal words of Arin Hanson:

"What, you think I came out the pussy drawing motherfucking Mozart?"

For a more generous paraphrase of a later statement - drawing is like a muscle, it's a skill that you can train. Anyone can draw with the right amount of time, dedication and patience.

You could try being a part of this very small community.

https://www.sketchport.com/

You can draw together or even just watch someone else in real time while chatting.

All the people there are really nice too. :)

Yea when I look back at it I really feel more sorry for the teacher than I do my 10 or so year old self.
