My only advice is if dude enters your place, stay as far back from him as possible with your handgun. Don't oull the movie trope and stand close to him so he can grab it. You wanna give yourself as much time to react as possible.

the area I live in is HARDCORE about guns. I bet I have a neighbor or two that are jealous of my position because they dream of stopping a bad guy with their gun. That's not really me. I don't hunt or anything and the pistol is for self-defense and my shotgun, when it's working correctly, is just for shooting for fun at camp.

Will do. And that's the plan anyways. I'm 6'4" and 250 pounds, I'm a big guy. But I don't have any fighting experience or anything so I would try to stay away from him.

Well, i'm leaving work soon. I'll be calling the cops when I get home like they told me to so they can open a case or whatever. If this thread is still around on Monday I'll do an update on what the cops said and if the guy came back or not.

I regret that I come to you with less than exciting news.

Friday I get home from work and call the non-emergency phone number. This time the cop seems way less excited about having to come over and take a report. When I called the first time the cop was like "oh we will FOR SURE want to know about this and we will send someone out when you call us again." Second time a different cop on the phone was like "wellllll I don't know how much we can do. We can take the video and if we eventually run across the guy then something will happen."

I said yeah, please send a guy out. Better safe than sorry. While I'm waiting I cut my grass and read on the deck. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half for the cop to get here.

He asks to see the video. I take him inside my apartment to show it to him on my computer. the conversation goes like this

Cop: (within 3 seconds of the video starting) Oh that's Fred (name changed)
Me: Wait you know this guy?
Cop: I THINK so. I have a buddy who deals with the town more than me and he specifically has dealt with Fred if it is, in fact, Fred.
Me: So what's Fred's deal? My tenant a few months ago opened her apartment door to find what she was told a "less than all there mentally" dude in her car that was arrested. Same guy?
Cop: I'm not sure. Fred is harmless enough. He wanders around and sometimes people will call in because he's being kind of creepy. Like he stopped on a sidewalk to look through a window with open blinds or something. In fact, I think that other cop I mentioned is talking to him up the road. I'm gonna go check in with him quick and come back.

5 Minutes Later cop pulls back up

Cop: Other cop had finished with Fred already. Other cop isn't sure it's him. I'm going to ask you to email me the video and i'll pass it around the barracks to see if anyone recognizes him. Realistically unless someone does I don't expect much to happen. If we keep getting reports in town of this type of thing hopefully others will have video so we can see him better.

Me: Okay. Well I guess I'll just keep an eye out? I'm just worried because if he does try to enter the apartment there's nowhere for me to go or hide so it could get physical. That's another of the reasons I wanted to make you aware of this.

Cop: That was a good idea. Just keep your doors locked and keep an eye on the security camera. I'll email you back if we find out who it is. Otherwise here is some paperwork for you to just go over the incident. If you notice footage a day after he comes back email it to me, if you notice him actually on your property call 911.

So yeah, that's really about it. I paraphrased the conversation. We talked more about the "harmless guy" he thinks it might be. Specifically a small history of this guys past problems with the law. The cop was trying to convince me the guy is harmless but not in a "why did you even call us, this guy won't hurt you" way but a "we've never had problems with him before but what he did was for sure fucked up" kind of way.

Every night I checked the footage and he hasn't shown up on my property since.

I know this started off exciting and is kind of ending in a let down.

That is the Nest Outdoor IQ. I know Google has been changing their cameras lately so I'm not sure this exact model is available anymore. It's the wired version.

It's a great camera and honestly takes good quality video but I think it's on the expensive side now. A year or two (or more) ago the "cheaper" companies were still figuring out how to make a decent camera at a low price point. Since I've bought this Nest I think that these cheaper cameras are just as good now. Me feeling is you can do the same quality for a lot lower price point. I also have to pay something like 6 bucks a month to be able to go back and make those clips like I had in the first post.

I'd do some research if you're looking for one.

I've been thinking about this.... On the very first video you see him glance up at the camera. I don't know if there was enough time or not for it to register that he saw a camera. There are some little lights on it that you can see in the dark but they can be tough to spot. I wonder if he did notice the camera and that's why the second video he hoped that by coming from under the deck the camera didn't see him or something. If you're standing under the camera you wouldn't think the FOV is as wide as it is.

@WrkHrdPlayHrdr I do feel you need to take some actions to passively discourage the creeper, man.

Like, "security by ADT" signs, even if it's fake (he won't know), motion sensing lights, maybe have a timer that plays random barking sounds every couple hours (not too much so you don't annoy the neighbors), etc.

I've been thinking about it. There's a little light under the deck that lights up when I turn my deck light on. I don't usually keep it on because it's close to the tenants window and I don't want to flood them with light. I may change that down there to a slightly dimmer motion sensing light.

I've thought about putting up a small sign saying there is a camera but I figured that would just make people find a way around the camera if they really wanted to break in. Maybe I'll rethink this.

That's how the cop was playing it. Every town has that one weird guy and this is the one from your town basically. Which again, if he isn't harming anyone or doing weird shit that's fine. But if he's looking in peoples windows one night and the next night hanging out on that dudes porch at midnight doing God knows what, then it's no longer "oh that's cool." Do I think he will break down my door to rob me? No, almost for sure he won't. However it doesn't mean I will treat it any differently if he does break down the door and try to rob me.
