For months, I've been hearing stories of her sneezing up copious amounts of blood during the night. How she has no energy anymore. How she whines in some confused kind of agony. He comes in late some mornings because he stayed up all night doing cleanup and caring for her. This morning he said she was so soaked in residual blood that she needed to be given a bath.

He's taken her to the vet numerous times, they did a biopsy once and already confirmed it. There's nothing they can do, it's only a matter of (painful) time. He won't listen to me or anyone else, and he's just letting her suffer at this point.

That's really fucking sad.

My ex (a vet) would at this point give the guy a roasting if it was her patient. She had no time for people like this.

I have a friend going through cancer treatments for her cat. The vet outright told her that there are no good and bad days with animals - once it's bad, it will be bad.

Similarly, my dad's cat had cancer in the mouth that was inoperable. She had to be put down as well. It's about quality of life.

You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't) how many dog owners cling to their dog with every last ounce of their strength.

My Mother-in-law is that way. She had a previous dog who had cancer that she spent a lot of money to have the dog's leg amputated, knowing it wouldn't only give the dog maybe 6 more months to live.

Now she took in a new dog who was old and unhealthy when they got it a few years ago. Now the dog has tons of different lumps, her teeth are falling out, she's partially deaf and she has trouble staying on her feet on slick surfaces. She still won't put the damn dog down. It's insane to me and my wife.

is it in pain or just a pain in the ass? my dad's cat is 20 and it's mostly deaf and has like cat dementia or something, kinda just paces around in circles, has a big cyst on her face, and has to be spoon fed. he told me he won't put her down because he thinks it's fucked up to just kill something because it's old and has health issues. compared the cat to my 92 y/o grandma who is in a nursing home and basically the same way (dementia, etc.). tbh i'm inclined to agree with him. if the animal is still eating and ambulatory why would you just kill it?

Eh it really depends on the amount of pain. If I was old and knew I was going to die I wouldnt want someone to just come in and kill me unless I was in agony every second of every day. Having more time to spend with those I care about trumps most amounts of pain. Im sure pets would say the same if they could.

The first dog was clearly in pain about a year before they finally put it down if not longer and then they finally decided to do it (on my birthday ironically) because they woke up and the dog wouldn't move.

The dog they have now, she has said wakes up howling and they don't know why. She pisses their bed, gets disoriented and runs into walls. She can't eat as much because her teeth are literally falling out. On top of that, she has seizures every other day. She's also on something like 3-4 meds a day.

To me, that indicates an animal that is probably not unhappy a lot of the time despite what they do for it. My MIL also always has to have either one of her or her husband at the house at all times, or they take the dog with them because she's worried she'll come home and the dog will be dead on the floor.

This weekend they came up for my daughter's birthday and when they were getting her out of the car, the dog just fell out of the car.

This is no quality of life imo.
