I've never met anyone who's been there and hasn't enjoyed it greatly. I have several friends (non Asian) who've been there more than once because they liked it so much. The culture, the sights, the food, etc.

It's not like the place is unsafe or dangerous.

I'd go, but I would rather not annoy the locals with my botched Mandarin/Cantonese/Shezuan.

If I go on vacation somewhere, it's going to be some place where I can feel comfortable and have a sense of privacy when I lay down in my hotel room at night.

Chinese culture and history has never really been appealing to me. The land is cool though

I went to Hong Kong once and it was nice. Then I learned about what the central government was doing to it and what they have continued to do and that upset me. Then I learned about other stuff that has happened historically including but not limited to Tiananmen square and that disappointed me. Then I learned about what the Chinese government is still actively doing like concentration camps against minority groups such as the Uyghurs and that disgusted me. And then I learned about what China is doing internationally such as in the South China Sea and that infuriated me.

As cool as China is or perhaps could be, I don't think I can go back again. Because doing so would be supporting the Chinese government, the people responsible for actively ruining China and perhaps to some extent the world.

if you think their operations in the south china sea are bad, look at their distant water fishing fleet and how they use civil fishing vehicles to push a military agenda while destroy ecosystems off all the continents.

And? You think you'd be in danger or something? I think the worst thing you'd experience is be seen as a curious oddity outside the big cities. China isn't the Southern US. You wouldn't get in trouble.

I'd love to visit China. I took 2 semesters of Mandarin and while I don't really remember much I could probably make it by with some brushing up.

Yeah I've known dark-skinned POC who taught in China and the weirdest thing they experienced (and it's a legitimate feeling to have a problem with this fetishization, to be clear) was people in smaller towns asking them to hold their baby and take a picture with them <_<
