By its nature, it's always going to be significantly more energetically demanding than normal computing. Computers will improve in their energy efficiency, but not matter how efficient you get, it will always be true that you can get more computing power by using more electricity. Because the yield from crypto mining scales linearly with computing power (more or less), miners are limited not by reaching some arbitrary threshold of "enough" mining power, but instead by how much they can profitably sustain.

Basically, if you make computers efficient enough that current mining setups could be considered "green," miners will just add more computers until the power consumption is roughly the same. It's a paradigm that has no inherent upper bound on power consumption.

Good, fuck crypto

Hurting the planet, making already scare computing resources even tougher to get for everyone else, enabling/easing all sorts of horrible illegal activity...

All so you can gamble on the modern version of tulips.

  1. Not what hyper inflation is.
  2. The stock market is inherently chaotic, otherwise it wouldn't exist.

our economy is rigged
they make it so you have to take out loans for everything and it jacks prices up

with crypto there is no leverage so it's always the same value and it increases in value as people buy more, not loan more

crypto is a fantastic idea compared to fiat which is debt based and built off debt that is like 100x what money we have

crypto is like the gold standard except there's a limit to how much can be mined
which makes it extremely valuable as a hedge
with gold if the price goes up you mine more
with crypto the price always goes up, until it doesn't, but it always has a top price

One of the major driving forces behind the high prices of video cards in recent years has been how profitable crypto mining has been. As it turns out, the same hardware that's good for rendering video is also good for crypto mining (which I'm guessing isn't at all surprising to anyone that understands the hardware requirements for both processes, but I am not such a person), so higher-end video cards have been flying off the shelves as mining operations snap them up.

Graphics cards are good at extremely simple math, applied extremely fast. That's, more or less, what they're built for.

Cryptocurrency is solving incredibly complex, and arbitrary math problems by brute force (i.e. "does 1 work, does 2 work").
3D graphics is a lot of moving pylons through matrices by shifting and warping them. This is done through long, simple math that computers excel in (araaaaaays).

That's the long and short of it.

Video cards aren't even the most efficient way to PoW mine anymore. Not to mention all the big chains with the exception of BTC are going to stake mining.

Anyone who sites environment as the reason they don't support crypto has not read beyond headlines, and doesn't actually understand Blockchain.

4th or 5th, they have tried multiple times to get 51% control of multiple chains. When they realize it's too decentralized and they can't actually control it, they make it illegal.
