The only ones that were really skirting the line were Dying Light 2 Cloud Edition and Chris Pratt as Mario.

With Dying Light 2, I think it's chasing a trend that just isn't feasible for everyone who wants to play the game, and the trend is another way that game producers are taking control of their end products away from users. People who want to play Dying Light 2 will probably get it on a platform that runs it natively and doesn't require a high-speed internet connection to play, especially if they live somewhere with shitty internet - most of Australia says hello. On one hand, the fact that it's on the Switch at all is interesting. On the other hand, it's a dicey proposition.

Chris Pratt as Mario was mitigated by the rest of the voice cast. Charlie Day as Luigi? Jack Black as Bowser? That fucking rules. He'll probably do a perfectly serviceable job, but it's Luigi and Bowser that I'm here to see.

The only thing I can see people being pissed about is Nintendo Online. Honestly, I don't agree with upping the subscription fee for N64 and Genesis games. I've always defended Nintendo Online from the people complaining about "ANOTHER subscription service!" with the fact that it's $20 a year - PSN and Xbox Gold are obscenely expensive, and on top of like Netflix and Spotify that shit adds up. But $20 for a year of online, even if it does seem like an arbitrary payment, is perfectly reasonable and downright cheap.

In Australia, we pay $30 a year. It's a yearly payment I can afford to make. If they're upping the price, I'm hoping it's going to be minimal. $40 would be ideal, and $50 would be acceptable. But when it gets into the realm of $60, that's where they begin to lose me. I'll be able to eke out the cash, but it's not gonna be a priority and the closer it gets to the "standard" subscription rate offered by other services, the less interested I am in playing along.

I'm not a fan of the price increase at all, but I'm hoping that it'll be an incremental update that stays within a very thrifty and competitive niche.

Other than those three things - today's Direct was fan-fucking-tastic.

The worst thing you could say about it is any omissions - no Mega Man Battle Network collection for example. But what did we get?

• New Kirby
• Fuckin Final Fantasy Kart - that shit looked great
• Castlevania Advance Collection
• Final Smash character reveal time
• Splatoon 3 - might be my first Splatoon game
• Bayonetta 3
• Actraiser - who was the guy who asked for Terranigma? You were off by a game or two

It was a strong showing of support titles. We're getting Smash and Animal Crossing events in October, we'll probably get a Pokemon direct in November before the gen 4 remakes come out, and I bet we're going to see a show-stopper showcase by the end of the year with more Bayonetta and BotW2.

I thought it looked fine. Kind of generic, but fine. The real problem will be basically everyone who owns a Switch already owns MK8, which is (at least based on the looks so far) just a better Kart game. Not to mention everyone is expecting the Switch will also get the inevitable MK9.

The cast announcements for Mario gave me the biggest reactions to one of these things in years I think. It just continued to be more and more hilarious.

The most interesting thing about Chocobo GP is the magic upgrade system, where if you drive over the same type of magic three times, you upgrade it from the basic one to the -a version to the -aga version. I also thought it was adorable as hell.

The chocobo racing game looked absolutely awful. Especially considering the most sold game on the console is Mario Kart 8, so everyone has that to compare it to.

The Nintendo Online Expansion was a bad announcement

Kirby looked incredibly boring.

The Nintendo online thing really rubs me the wrong way. I only ever bought it to play Monster Hunter and Animal Crossing online, never bothered much with the NES/SNES online since there are better ways to play those games.

Switch Online just doesn't offer anything to justify its price beyond paywalling online play, especially considering it doesn't offer basic shit like party chat (except for that dumb app you can download)

N64 games (and other consoles honestly) should have been part of it a long time ago, since they dont want to have a virtual console anymore. Upping the price for what should have been included is a fucking joke

My only actual disappointment was no Dread demo, less for me and more so I could press some friends into playing it. Lots of "meh" though. Actraiser was my highlight by a good margin.
