and why?
I've been using the black knight sword for a while because it had the highest stats. I was able to max it out at +5 and doesn't seem like it goes any further. I can now choose to get either the claymore or zweihander up with the large titanite shards. which one should I use?

Honestly depends on preferred moveset. I always liked the claymore moveset but it's been ages since I played.

Also are we talking Dark Souls 1, 2, or 3? That makes a difference too.

first time playing it. started a few weeks ago. haven't played 2 or 3 yet

1) +5 is the furthest the black knight sword goes

2) a +15 zweihander or claymore is better than the +5 black knight sword

the claymore is the best weapon out of those three but the zweihander is perfectly fine for anything pve.

yes.

the zwei will generally have higher attack power than the bks, but the claymore will not until you have a sizable chunk of dex to go with str.

the moveset, but i do think the zwei probably wins out in pve, now that i think about it. the one thing i'm trying to caution about here is that both the zwei and the black knight sword are like backstab flags against another player.

which one is "better" is going to be determined by your stats, i suspect. go to the fextralife wiki and look at both weapons. the difference with the Zwei and Claymore vs BKS is the former can be infused (permabuff with lightning or fire, change scaling, etc) but the BKS cannot.

I don't think the claymore and BKS have huge damage difference once you get high scaling stats. That said the BKS is gonna be stronger for a majority of the time, especially so at lower levels. Plus it upgrades with twinkling titanite which is always good.

Main use case for the claymore is a better R2, buffing, and weight.

The Zwei is a different weapon type from the other two, I don't much like ultra greatswords

some context... I'm like level 107 or something. I got my strength to 30 and dex to 45. endurance is 40 and the rest was into vit. I don't think I put points into anything else

I don't know if that's a really high level for a first timer or not... but I realized how many souls I was getting from the silver knights in anor londo so I spent a few days grinding them while watching youtube lol

edit: oh wait yeah. attunement has a few points in it as well. (I went pyromancer)

that dex is likely high enough to have the claymore come out ahead of the black knight sword in terms of attack power.

I didn't know this was a thing. looks like a random drop tho so I don't think it's in the running

so from the sounds of it, claymore is better than black knight sword at my stats

so my decision comes down to whether I like the claymore or zweihander moveset, I guess?
