I love the idea of an RPG spanning the main character's entire life, as well as the true identity of the Zenitian Hero in this game, but the overall execution is let down by being a Dragon Quest game. Characteristically for the series, it's dull, tepid, and generic in terms of its individual characters and most of the story beats. One big mistake in the pacing was having the player choose his wife right after he meets one of the two candidates.

The purpose of story isn't to create something technically flawless--it's to create something that matters to an audience. If a story resonates with you, go crazy with a high rating.

I will say I was surprised Higurashi did so well, the anime is pretty unremarkable. Sometimes the ratings in this topic make me think B8 doesn't understand any method of storytelling besides copious dialog lol

Since others are voting on DQV without having beaten it (and I nominated it for KP's ranking way back when), I guess I'll vote too...

I think the archetypal nature of this particular tale's wrapping tends to accentuate its deviations more than anything. For example, I'd guess there's very few other RPGs where the equivalent of (minor spoilers) the moment that ends the first generation is quite so shocking, no matter how well-executed.

Well, at least Celeste got a pretty good score (for example), especially considering multiple voters kind of proved they didn't understand any method of storytelling besides copious dialog. And anyways I'd guess that the people who wouldn't love Higurashi pretty much haven't played it (such as me).

Speaking of stories without copious dialog, I'd also like to nominate GRIS.

I love it when games try to tell a story with little to no dialogue.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic story (not that this saying much!), for instance.
