What a dumbass mechanic to put in. If it isn't broke don't fix it. I'm done with it.

This is the real problem with it. It's by far the closest a Zelda game has come to straight up reusing a map (though BotW 2 is looking like it might have that beat...)

LBW is so much better than LTTP. I'm glad we moved past that; I honestly think NES games have aged considerably better than SNES games as a whole for reasons that this topic wasn't made for.

As for this topic, I disagree. It's barely an inconvenience, and you'll be able to buy everything you need pretty quickly. I found it nice that I could just get whatever items I needed right away instead of being forced to go through an overall linear adventure. It allowed me to play the game anyway I wanted to almost.

Nah. LBW has better combat and restores the open adventure feeling from TLOZ 1.

The paint gimmick was kinda dumb but that's only a minor part of the game.

The original LOZ was pretty loose about it.

  • 1, 2, and 3 can be done in any order.
  • 8 can be done after 1.
  • 4 can be done after 3.
  • 5 can be done after 4.
  • 7 can be done after 5.
  • 6 can be done after 1 and 3.
Or, the "get the dungeon item and leave" play style is completely possible. There's no plot-gating at all.

Nope, LttP has no diagonal attacking. The monster physics & behavior is also a little different.

Yeah, I respect LoZ big-time. Again, there's a lot from the NES that I like more than the SNES.

What do you mean no diagonal attacking? I slash things diagonally all the time. Are you talking about projectile attacks? And of course monster physics and behavior are different - they're different games on different systems. The difference between the combat in both games is negligible at best, and combat as a whole is more satisfying in LttP since they didn't have to dumb down the difficulty in every dungeon to accommodate being able to do them in any order after the first.

The sword itself can only slash in cardinal directions. The projectile attacks as well but even the sword is also limited. Going directly from LBW to LttP really exposes how clunky the gameplay was.

My only complaint about the rental system is that there is no way to auto-rerent upon game over. What's the point of continuing from the dungeon if you just lost some necessary items? Otherwise, I really like the mechanic.

LBW's story is leaps and bounds above LttP.

I actually cannot think of an appropriate metaphor for how much better LBW's story is. It's probably the strongest story in a Zelda game other than MM.

I've done exactly that a few times and there's nothing "clunky" about it.

Maybe not "leaps and bounds," but I'll definitely concede that the story is better. So horray, LBW improved on the least important element of a Zelda game over LttP?

I'm saying if you push up + left and slash, you will hit only the 90 degree arc with the center to either the up or left.

In LBW the center of the arc would be angled to the up left.

It makes an enormous difference.

It really doesn't. Bottom line you can still easily hit enemies diagonal to Link in both games. It's an absolute nonissue.

LBW just takes every element of LttP and improves on it. Idk whats up people's butts about LttP.

I didn't mind the weapon renting or dungeon order or whatever. It was fun having every ability and I felt like every item was used in a fun way in the dungeons. The 2D mechanic felt natural for the puzzles and just for the perspective of top down. I thought the story was really cute and effective; it was like an actual story instead of just random shit.
