Was SNL ever funny?

I've never really paid it much attention as I didnt have a TV in the 90s. I've watched needs more cowbell, natalie portman rap, and dick in a box on youtube and it isnt funny at all imo. And I dont think that "I dont get it." It's just really juvenile and not that smart, nor creative.

That era had actually funny shit too liike Fresh Prince and Seinfeld.

I mean I enjoyed Eddie Murphy when I was a kid. his stuff is pretty OK now. I actually saw coming to america for the first time recently and it was honestly a top 10 worst movie i've ever seen . Just completely incoherent. Zany for the sake of being zany. It's like trying to watch an Adam Sandler movie as an adult.

I feel like humor has just come a long way since SNL. Since seinfeld, we've had community, Rick and Morty, futurama, Southpark, it's always sunny. and with talk shows an average Conan segment is 10x funnier than what i've seen from SNL

these are of course just opinions, but modern humor seems much more layered

If you don't think Farley's motivational speaker was funny, then that's your problem, not SNL's.

SNL was always known for being hit-or-miss and more or less peaked in the 80s with some scattered 90s sketches being funny. That said, it hasn't been culturally relevant in forever.

It speaks volumes that a show can exist for almost half a century yet only have about an hours' worth of decent content.

Im leaning toward no but I havent seen enough of the old episodes to say for sure.

That sort of comedy is just really difficult to do. Although I did really like Mr. Show back in the day

There have been many memorable standout sketches over the years, more in the past than now, but the bulk of the show has always been mediocre at best imo
nobody remembers the tons of garbage sketches from the 70s and 80s, just the good ones.

I remember that brief era when Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garafallo, Chris Elliot, Jay Mohr, and yes, Norm MacDonald phased out Myers, Carvey, and Hartman and the jokes often fell flat because their acknowledgingly "white, liberal" audience didn't get or want to get the edgier, sometimes politically incorrect sort of writing that the show ironically clashed against when MadTV was picking up steam.

Anyway, yes it has been funny sometimes now but the talent ratio has gotten shittier with everyone relying too much on the written cue card jokes than on their performances so it comes off cringy bad.

Yes
There was a sketch where a shark would make it's way into unsuspecting victim's homes under the guise of delivering a candygram. It's definitely the timeless type of humor that will live on forever.

Also The Rock made a very evil robot once. That was also pretty good.

totally agree, and Farley is one of my favorite comic actors of all time. Tommy boy my fav movie since I was a kid. He had spade and applegate rolling so bad in the matt foley sketch they could barely deliver their lines, and the whole sketch kinda falls flat because of it

I feel like their political sketch cold opens have gotten particularly bad but otherwise I think it's been around the same quality since I was a kid. It's just that it used to be SNL vs Mad TV or things like that and nowadays it's SNL vs [the best of all Youtube sketches, etc.] as the price of producing videos of reasonable quality has decreased.

It was definitely hilarious for a good while. Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell in the lifeguard skit was one of the funniest things Ive ever seen.

If you dont like the humor from SNL its kinda weird to say its not funny. Just say its not your cup of tea and move on.

Just like any sketch comedy show, it has it's moments.

Generally, I want to say no.

The meat of the actual comedy is usually parody, which in itself is low hanging fruit.

I liked it when I was a kid. Grew up during the era of Norm Macdonald, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell and so on. And absolutely idolized those guys.

But I'm sure I wouldn't like it as much if I went back and watched those episodes now. Partly because it's all dated, but also SNL has always been aimed at a younger demographic.
